Iowa and IL senators weigh in on Gorsuch confirmation

Neil Gorsuch

In a letter dated Monday and sent to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Elway writes that Gorsuch "has demonstrated tremendous intelligence, character and fairness" as a federal appeals court judge based in Denver. Now, the Senate will exercise its "advice and consent" role, a politically fraught decision with liberals pressuring Democrats to reject Gorsuch.

If Gorsuch is confirmed by the Senate, as expected, he would restore a narrow 5-4 conservative court majority. Kelly Ayotte, right, arrives for a meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2017.

Gorsuch's confirmation is considered crucial for the Trump administration, who are filling a vacancy left by the death of justice Antonin Scalia. A look at the process.

Priorities has already begun to spend to protect the Obama legacy item, and it is expected to trigger spending from labor and community groups, as well. Skeptical Democrats and supportive Republicans greeted Judge Neil Gorsuch as the confirmation hearings began. "I look forward to having Neil Gorsuch, one of our own from the great state of Colorado, as the next Supreme Court justice".

There is still a lot of resentment among Democrats that Republicans kept former President Obama's nominee Judge Merrick Garland from even getting a hearing.

Spicer: Former Campaign Chair Paul Manafort Played A 'Very Limited Role'
American taxpayers have paid roughly $3.3 million to cover Trump's Mar-a-Lago visits . Wherever he goes, he carries the apparatus of the White House with us...

The stakes are high with any court pick, and especially now as confirmation of Gorsuch would ensure a conservative advantage on the court.

Gorsuch, a cool-headed and amiable jurist, gave Democrats very little ammunition to use against him, although there could be more drama when he takes questions. Gorsuch told several lawmakers privately that he was disheartened by Trump's attacks on judges who ruled against him over his immigration ban, but that didn't go far enough for Democrats.

In his opening statement, Committee Chairman Sen.

A group spokesman Thursday did not answer when asked whether it still planned to advertise on the Gorsuch effort. Democrats angrily condemned Republicans for refusing to act on Barack Obama's nominee a year ago, while Republicans accused Democrats of trying to turn Gorsuch's confirmation hearing into a referendum on the GOP president. So instead of approving or rejecting the nominee, the committee will usually report the nomination favorably, unfavorably or without recommendation. The filibuster rule when invoked requires 60 of the 100 votes to advance a bill or nomination, contrasted with the simple 51-vote majority that applies in most cases. Robert Bork, whose nomination was ultimately rejected by the Senate, was reported unfavorably in 1987; Clarence Thomas, who won confirmation, was reported without recommendation in 1991. Gorsuch's reported statements perpetuate this stereotype and demand close scrutiny in his hearing this week.

Republicans control the Senate 52-48. It's unclear whether Republicans will have those votes, meaning Democrats have the ability to block the nomination. In recent years, senators have sat at their desks during a Supreme Court vote and stood one by one to cast their votes. Gorsuch is President Trump's choice to succeed Justice Antonin Scalia who died previous year.
