Iraqi prime minister joins Trump for meeting focusing on IS

Prime Minister of Iraq Haider Al Abadi during a talk at the second day of the 53rd Munich Security Conference

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi's first visit to Washington since Trump's inauguration comes before Trump hosts a 68-nation meeting geared toward advancing the fight against the militant group.

Trump, who has been a staunch opponent of the worldwide agreement negotiated by the USA under President Barack Obama, took the opportunity to criticize it amid meeting Abadi in the White House on Monday.

"We will figure something out".

Trump said he also would address what he described as a "vacuum" that was created when so-called Islamic State (IS) militants took over large swaths of territory in western and northern Iraq.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he won assurances of greater United States support in fighting ISIS militants in talks on Monday with President Donald Trump and top advisers, but cautioned that military might alone would not be sufficient.

"I think this administration wants to be more engaged in fighting terrorism", he said.

President Donald Trump is welcoming Iraq's prime minister to the White House for their first meeting since Trump assumed office. "But we are looking forward to more cooperation between us and the USA", he said.

As reporters were leaving, al-Abadi leaned over to Trump and said jokingly, "We have nothing to do with the wiretap".

Extending influence in Syria, Russia says it will train Kurdish troops
He declined to say if the new training programme was supported by any foreign militaries. He said Russian troops already have arrived in the area.

"We have been given assurances that the support will not only continue but will accelerate".

"But of course we have to be careful here", Abadi said.

The Iraqi leader's first meeting with Trump comes as the USA administration prepares for a 68-nation meeting later this week of the Global Coalition working to defeat Islamic State.

He also sought greater assistance to help the country confront a humanitarian crisis, with more than 4 million people displaced in the fighting.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi speaks during a meeting with President Donald Trump in the Cabinet Room of the White House, March 20, 2017.

But the extent of Trump's commitment to helping war-torn Iraq remains to be seen amid significant proposed budget cuts for the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The two leaders agreed that it is essential that Iraq develop and maintain positive relations with regional partners, both to enhance stability in the Middle East and help Iraq begin to rebuild from the ravages of the brutal occupation of the ISIS.
