Iraqi forces captured the eastern side of Mosul in January after 100 days of fighting and launched their attack on the districts that lie west of the Tigris on February 19.

A U.S.general in the worldwide coalition in Iraq says ISIS forces defending western Mosul are disorganized and some foreign fighters are trying to leave the city, the Reuters news agency reports.

Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Mosul on Tuesday morning to visit Iraqi forces, accord to his office.

Al-Dawasa, which includes the Nineveh province governor's headquarters and other government buildings was among several areas assaulted by Iraqi forces on Sunday. Gen. Abbas al-Jabouri, chief of staff of Iraqi police's emergency response division, that led the attack. His unit then pulled back to a base on the edge of Mosul's Tayran neighbourhood, saying the clashes were still under way at the complex later on Tuesday.

The battles in southwestern part of the western side of Mosul resulted in the killing of many IS militants and the destruction of four auto bombs and 25 explosive devices planted by IS militants, according to the statement.

More than 45,000 people have fled west Mosul since the push to retake it began, while over 200,000 are now displaced as a result of the battle to retake the city, which was launched on October 17, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Also in the day, the commandos of the Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) completely freed the neighborhood of Tel al-Rumman and continued fighting in the nearby Mansour neighborhood in the southwestern part of Mosul's western side, the JOC statement said.

The IOM figures indicate the number of people who came from west Mosul to sites for the displaced from February 25, when the arrivals began, through Sunday.

"Unfortunately, there is a clear shortfall in the work of these (UN) organisations", Jassem Mohammed al-Jaff said in a statement.

All the bridges crossing the Tigris in Mosul have been damaged or destroyed, and Iraqi forces would either have to fix them or install floating bridges to reconnect the two banks of the river which divides the city.

"The number of people displaced from western Mosul now stands at 57,000, while the number of those displaced from the entire city has reached some 287,000", ministry spokesman Sattar Nowruz told Anadolu Agency.

IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces backed by US-led air strikes and other support have since regained most of the territory they lost.
