NY Man Faces Murder Charges After Running Over EMT With Stolen Ambulance

Police are seen at a Bronx intersection where two EMTs were struck by their ambulance

The FDNY draped ceremonial black bunting across the fire house of an emergency medical technician killed after she was run over by her own ambulance that had just been stolen. Jose Gonzalez, a 25-year-old Bronx resident, ran over her, inflicting fatal injuries, authorities said.

The two paramedics were told a man was riding on the back bumper of their ambulance when they stopped to check, according to Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro. He hit a parked, unoccupied 1997 Lincoln Town vehicle, then dragged Arroyo into the middle of the intersection, police said.

The bystander's video starts with a chaotic scene: An ambulance runs through an intersection in NY, one of its doors open, lights flashing.

"She was just a lovely person", said Liz Perez, whose husband is the superintendent of the building and who knew Arroyo for about five years.

An off-duty Metropolitan Transportation Authority officer and several good Samaritans apprehended the suspect when he tried to flee, authorities said.

More than 35 EMT workers, in full uniform, gathered outside a police precinct early Friday to jeer at Gonzalez while he was being transported, the Daily News reports.

According to the Post, a witness captured video of the incident.

A wake for Arroyo is scheduled over two days beginning Thursday.

The other staff member was in the passenger seat of the ambulance as it was being stolen. Arroyo died at Jacobi Medical Center.

He added: "We know our EMTs (emergency medical technicians) are courageous". They do crucial work.

"They should not ever have to be subjected to violence, and yet that danger always exists for them", he said.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio said the MTA officer "intervened heroically and decisively". She was not only a mother of five, but a mother to the 100-plus people who worked here. A source told the news he has a lengthy criminal record and "was incoherent and talking to himself". Arroyo tried to pull him out of the ambulance, but he put the vehicle in reverse, knocking her to the ground, police said. Jose Gonzalez, 25, of the Bronx, has been charged with murder, grand larceny and operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs.

Ernest Watson, 67, said he had known Arroyo since she was 12, and had watched her grow up from a bright young girl into a strong, dedicated mother of five boys who had raised her sons right.
