British Lawmakers Overwhelmingly Support Early General Election In June

British Prime Minister Theresa May has called for a general election to take place on Thursday, 8 June.

Lawmakers voted Wednesday by a resounding 522 to 13 to back May's call for an election, easily surpassing the two-thirds majority in the 650-seat House of Commons needed to trigger an early vote.

Rejecting the PM's claim that an election is needed to prevent disunity at Westminster undermining a Brexit deal, Mr Corbyn said: "There is no obstacle to the Government negotiating, but, instead of getting on with the job, she is painting herself as the prisoner of the Liberal Democrats".

The opposition Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats welcomed May's surprise call on April 18 for the early poll, while the Scottish National Party (SNP) signaled that its deputies would abstain in the vote.

Britain's Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced Tuesday a snap general election to be held on June 8.

May said it was "only recently and reluctantly" that she had chose to call for a snap election, rather than serve a fixed term until 2020 under what is a slim Tory majority.

In a reversal of her earlier position that Parliament should remain in place until 2020, May said she "reluctantly" chose to approach lawmakers for an early national poll on June 8 in order to put to rest "the risks of uncertainty and instability. and to continue to give the country the strong and stable leadership it demands".

She has also played up the strength of the economy, which has so far defied predictions of a slowdown - a key campaign theme that her Conservative Party will use to try to undermine Labour in the election.

In Bolton, Mrs May said the country now has a "unity of purpose" and a desire for the Government to "get on" with implementing Brexit and "making a success of it".

The prime minister, who took office after David Cameron resigned following the European Union vote, is seeking a personal mandate for her plan to pull Britain out of Europe's single market.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn says this is an opportunity for a new direction.

But Labour MP Gisela Stuart, one of the architects of Brexit as co-chair of Vote Leave, said she would be standing down after 20 years as MP for Birmingham Edgbaston.

"The UK elections do not change our EU27 plans", Preben Aamann, a spokesperson for European Council President Donald Tusk, said in a statement on Tuesday.

Following the election decision, the parliament will be dissolved on May 2.

Opening a Commons debate on the election motion the Prime Minister told MPs it was time to "put our fate in the hands of the people and let the people decide" and that her party would provide "strong and stable leadership in the national interest".

The election announcement caused a rally in the pound, which had fallen since the Brexit vote, amid speculation that May will be returned with a stronger mandate.

May is adamant she will not take part in a televised debate in the run-up to the vote, despite numerous MPs calling for her to do so.
