Chris Packham due to face Maltese court accused of documentary shoot assault

Chris Packham says he is due in court in Gozo on assault charge

British naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham was back in Malta this week after having already carried out a TV special on Malta's spring hunting season.

He is due to appear in court charged with "using force against any person with intention to insult or hurt them".

Chris Packham on Springwatch a year ago.

Packham's agent said that he and his team were shouted at and shoved by two men who drove up to them during filming for a documentary called Malta: Massacre on Migration.

Packham's producer Ruth Peacey tweeted a photo of a DVD containing video footage of the incident following the verdict, with Packham saying in another post, "wait until you see our evidence".

He insisted he was "completely innocent" - and that he was the victim of being "pushed and jostled around".

"Not only was I a victim of being pushed around but I was then pushed all the way up the street by a policeman", he continued.

MPs back May's call for snap election
However, on Tuesday she said she had a change of heart in order to bring unity within the political corridors of Britain. Mrs May added: "I believe in campaigns where politicians actually get out and about and meet with voters".

Neither of the pair was present for the court appearance, Packham said.

Later, he said he was assaulted while filming on a roadside when a vehicle appeared and two men jumped out.

"Malta is transgressing the European Birds Directive, and there's a lot of illegal activity taking place here, and a lot of legalised ie Maltese activity which doesn't comply with what the rest of Europe wants to do with its birds", he claimed in the Facebook video above.

The wildlife campaigner said the alleged assault occurred hours after he had called police after seeing what he thought were a number of protected species being kept in cages on the island.

But by the time the WBRU arrived hours later, the birds were no longer visible in the aviary. "He had [the birds] there initially, but by the time the police turned up they'd all mysteriously vanished".

"Malta! You point out suspected criminals to the police... and you end up in court", he vented on Twitter shortly after his arrest earlier this week.
