Facebook Camera Effects Bring Magic, Whimsy to Pics

Facebook is focused on creating experiences that will fundamentally change how people interact with each other and the physical world

CEO Mark Zuckerberg kicked off the gathering of programmers and other tech folks by talking about augmented reality tools he envisions on Facebook. Zuckerberg pledged that his company would work to prevent postings of incidents like the fatal shooting in Cleveland that remained was visible on social network site for some two hours.

"We see the beginning of a new platform", Zuckerberg said.

In the future, Facebook wants to really hone in on locations so people can leave virtual notes for friends in very specific places, such as a home refrigerator or a menu at a restaurant. The program is free to join, community-driven, and open to developers of all skill levels.

Facebook says eventually we're headed to AR glasses or even contact lenses, but what's achievable now is a $1 app, instead of a $500 pair of glasses.

Facebook's selection of chat bots has quickly grown since the company opened its Messenger platform to developers, but there hasn't been an easy way to find new bots. Automated insights is now in open beta.

John Terry to leave Chelsea F.C. at end of the season
The 35-year-old has found his first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge to be severely restricted this season as he approaches the end of his career.

Michael Abrash, Chief Scientist at Oculus, as-ever delivered an inspiring presentation at today's F8 conference, this time on the topic of Augmented Reality.

Augmented reality first broke onto the mainstream a year ago with Pokémon Go, which harnessed the smartphone camera to integrate a videogame with reality. Facebook added special effects cameras to its core apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.

According to TechCrunch, he criticised other apps for keeping their AR tools to themselves. Facebook's version, which the company unveiled at its f8 developers conference here, is a work in progress: it relies mainly on third-party developers to come up with their own designs and filters using the new Camera Effects platform.

This new camera makes use of augmented reality (AR) allowing you to add masks, frames, and objects to your pictures or while you record video (features Snapchat users will be familiar with).

Zuckerberg said that turning people's faces into cartoon animal faces or Pokemon Go are early examples of AR. Also available to users beginning today: a limited library of augmented effects. "We see the beginning of a new platform, we're going to make the camera the first mainstream AR platform", announced Zuckerberg.
