Fox News addresses O'Reilly exit on air

Lisa Bloom, who represents three women accusing O'Reilly of sexual harassment, called the announcement by Fox News a victory for victims who were courageous enough to come forward and hopes more will now do the same.

Fox News has chose to part ways with star cable news host Bill O'Reilly following allegations of sexual harassment, the company said.

Of course it wasn't ratings that led to O'Reilly's downfall, an unceremonious exit unparalleled in an industry where a TV news host's rise and fall is inextricably tied to viewership.

This particular show consistently got Fox News its best ratings, drawing nearly 4 million viewers a night and generating more than $446 million in advertising revenue between 2014 and 2016, according to Kantar Media.

"Cable news is someone standing on a mountain top shouting, and Bill O'Reilly was on the highest peak so he echoed across the landscape".

And he keeps echoing in the broader media landscape.

In the wake of the Times report, two more women have come forward to accuse O'Reilly of harassment, one anonymously. She quit the job - and the business - due to her treatment by O'Reilly, he said. Before the advertising boycott, there was the prospect of even more: his audience was larger in the first three months of 2017 than it has ever been.

But the climate shifted dramatically after The New York Times reported on April 1 that O'Reilly or Fox had paid $13 million to settle five cases against him alleging sexual or other harassment.

"This decision follows an extensive review done in collaboration with outside counsel", 21st Century Fox said in an email to employees, which was obtained by CNN.

"I understand how hard this has been for many of you", Rupert Murdoch said in the memo.

With a profit centre gone, 21st Century Fox stock fell nearly 1% on Wednesday in heavy trading.

O'Reilly has been on holiday since 12 April, and was photographed shaking hands with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Wednesday, although it was not clear whether the Pontiff knew who O'Reilly was.

The embattled news anchor and longtime pillar of Fox News was dropped on Wednesday by the network he helped build amid a steady stream of allegations that he engaged in sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour toward women over the years. "Big major brands" hit the hills and ran "as far away from The O'Reilly Factor as possible", said Robinson.

Fox News Channel says "Tucker Carlson Tonight" will begin airing an hour earlier to fill the time slot vacated by Bill O'Reilly, who lost his job Wednesday after allegations that he sexually harassed women.

O'Reilly had ruled the "no spin zone" on television with a quick smile and an even quicker temper.

Charles Herring, the president of Herring Networks, which owns OANN, said he expected Fox would replace O'Reilly with a highly capable host, but he's hopeful that "viewers migrate to One America News".

The statement from 21st Century Fox is coming after growing public resentment about O'Reilly's alleged behavior. "No more silencing women!"

The National Geographic channel has aired a series of adaptations of O'Reilly books, including "Killing Reagan" and "Killing Kennedy".

Prior to his termination, O'Reilly was "under a bit of fire internally" and no longer had the type of power he once held at Fox.
