North Korea 'ready to hit back'

U.S. Marine soldiers patrol during the U.S.-South Korea joint Exercise Operation Pacific Reach in Pohang South Korea. The Trump administration has settled on its North Korea strategy after a two-month review

North Korea showed two new kinds of ICBM enclosed in canister launchers mounted on the back of trucks, suggesting Pyongyang was working towards a "new concept" of ICBM, said Melissa Hanham, a senior research associate at the US-based Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

Choe Ryong Hae - believed to be the second-most powerful official in the country - in his address to the soldiers during the parade, blamed Donald Trump for "creating a war situation" in the Korean Peninsula promising to respond with all out war to USA aggression.

"We're prepared to respond to an all-out war with an all-out war", North Korean military official Choe Ryong-Hae said.

Instead, North Korea held a parade displaying a variety of ballistic missiles it has recently tested among other weapons, according to the Washington Post, as the country marked the 105th birthday of Kim Il Sung, the nation's founder and Kim Jong Un's grandfather.

Saturday's parade was staged amid soaring tensions with the United States, which has not ruled out military action to prevent North Korea from progressing in its nuclear weapons programs.

The missiles use solid fuel, making them easier to load and harder to detect than liquid fuel rockets.

One of the missiles in particular caught the attention of South Korean military analysts watching via the North's state television broadcast.

North Korea has started a massive parade in Pyongyang to mark the 105th birthday of its founding father, Kim Il Sung, and trumpet the leadership of third-generation dictator Kim Jong Un.

The display raised concerns that North Korea has developed intercontinental ballistic missiles that would allow the country to attack the mainland USA and Europe, according to CNN.

In this image taken from video aired by North Korean broadcaster KRT, a portrait of Kim Il-sung is carried during a parade at the square named for him in Pyongyang on Saturday, April 15, 2017.

China quickly responded to the new jousting in the nuclear hotspot, saying there will be no victor in a war between the US and North Korea. North Korea was widely expected to conduct its sixth nuclear test, which did not occur.

"No nation in the world develops missiles and shows the real thing during a parade, it's just too unsafe", Markus Schiller, a weapons expert with ST Analytics, told CNN that parades always involve "mock-ups".

China's state-run media warned that the US President was mistaken if he believed that piling military pressure on North Korea would resolve the regime's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.

But if the parade signaled a readiness for war, North Korea has long insisted that its goal is peace - and its own survival - with its growing arsenal a way to ensure that the government in Pyongyang is not easily overthrown. North Korea also launched a long-range rocket previous year that put a satellite into orbit, which Washington, Seoul and others saw as a banned test of missile technology.
