Pound surge suggests United Kingdom election will yield smoother Brexit

The Conservative Party has recorded its highest level of support since early 2008, according to a poll conducted after Prime Minister Theresa May called for a snap general election on June 8.

"The British people voted past year to leave the European Union".

Under electoral law, May must win a two thirds majority in a parliamentary vote due to be held later on Wednesday before she can officially call an early election.

If this motion is carried, the next general election would take place in May 2022 (see section 1 (3) of the 2011 Act), which could be later than not just a negotiated deal but also any transitional period.

"What do we know that the leader of the Labour Party, the leader of the Liberal Democrats and the leader of the Scottish nationalists have in common?" she asked parliament.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron dismissed the PM's claims as "nonsense" and said she only wanted an election to secure an increased majority.

Mrs May confirmed that changing the date of the 2020 election would prevent it clashing with what she called "the most crucial part of the negotiations".

The House of Commons will vote later Wednesday on whether to support May's call for a snap election.

"We expect to have the Brexit guidelines adopted by the European Council on 29 April and, following that, the Brexit negotiating directives ready on 22 May", Aamann told AFP.

The prime minister did give some hints about how long she expected a Brexit deal to take.

Vinson carrier group expected off Korea in late April
The communist state has conducted two nuclear tests and test-fired almost 30 missiles since previous year . The failure came as Vice President Mike Pence arrived in the South for talks.

That would limit the scope for parliament to block or water down her plan for Britain to quit the European Union single market and to prioritise immigration control. She has also played up the strength of the British economy, which has so far defied predictions of a slowdown - a key campaign theme that her Conservative Party will use to try to undermine Labour in the election.

She said: "This is the opportunity for Jeremy Corbyn to do an election campaign".

Video: Another election?! Are you bored with them yet?

The former interior minister, who became prime minister without an election when her predecessor David Cameron quit after last year's referendum vote for Brexit, said she needed to strengthen her hand in negotiations which will reshape Britain and test the cohesion of the EU.

Her spokesman said she had the backing of her top team of ministers and had informed Queen Elizabeth of her plans on Monday.

"But we still don't have a majority of people supporting it or supporting a referendum at this time".

The current Parliament will dissolve on June 3.

She said: "Politics and democracy are about of course people having different opinions, different views. It is about the crisis her Government has plunged our National Health Service into, the cuts to our children's schools which will limit the chances of every child in Britain, four million of whom now live in poverty".

Leaders of European Union states are due to adopt negotiating guidelines at an April 29 summit, and the bloc will prepare detailed plans for the talks with Britain by late May.

The election announcement caused a rally in the pound, which had fallen since the Brexit vote, amid speculation that May will be returned with a stronger mandate.
