Responders stop North Slope oil leak

In Anchorage, Alaska, a large team of oil crews are busy to stop the leakage in a state's oil well, which gone rogue after an unpredicted explosion occurred in the well just after evasion of natural gas, said a federal official. A second leak that was emitting gas at a reduced rate was closed off overnight on Sunday, Bloomberg reported, citing a spokeswoman for BP.

According to Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation spokeswoman Candice Bressler, the well is back under control. The pressure of the well was monitored all night. The department has not yet been able to estimate how much crude has been released, it said. This is because the cause of such a gas release is still unknown. There had been no injuries and no reports of harm to wildlife.

The North Slope is a remote location and was once home to the biggest oilfields of America. North Slope production rose to 565,000 barrels a day in March, its highest level since December 2013. It is another sign, along with multibillion-barrel discoveries in recent months, that the area may be reversing decades of declining volumes. Alyeska Pipeline Service Co.is a joint partnership between North Slope's producers Exxon Mobil Corp., BP Plc, and ConocoPhillips. In 2006, a corroded pipeline released almost 5,000 barrels (bbl) of crude oil, the largest oil spill in the North Slope at the time.
