Tens of thousands of Venezuelans march against Maduro

Venezuela's Supreme Court abandoned measures to seize power from the opposition-controlled legislature after the moves drew global condemnation and raised pressure on President Nicolas Maduro.

The ambassador also accused the United States and OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro of encouraging an overthrow of Venezuela's socialist government, echoing an earlier accusation by Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.

Venezuela suffered its last major wave of unrest in 2014, when 43 people were killed in anti-government riots. Tens of thousands of opponents of President Nicolas Maduro flooded the streets of Caracas in wh. They've called for another day of protests Thursday.

Venezuelans in South Florida congregated in front of the emblematic Freedom Tower on Wednesday to show support for marches against Venezuela's president. Tens of thousands of opponents of President Nicolas Maduro flooded the streets of vehicle.

Nicolas Maduro has been careful not to antagonise the new U.S. president, but the Trump administration has recently stepped up criticism of Venezuela's government.

In the eastern district of Bello Monte, the PNB and National Guard managed to drive the demonstrators back, forcing hundreds of them to jump into the polluted Guaire River that flows through the city to escape the police assault.

Across the country the clashes were intense. In several cities, protesters described being terrorized by militia members, some of them armed and circling the protesters in motorcycles.

The latest crisis was triggered by last month's Supreme Court decision to officially take over power from the opposition-controlled parliament.

"Today the coup plotters tried to take power again and we have defeated them", Maduro said.

Ossoff was quick to declare "a victory for the ages" for Democrats. "Dems failed in Kansas and are now failing in Georgia. The victor replaces Republican Tom Price, who stepped down to serve as Trump's Secretary of Health and Human Services.

With its momentum renewed, the opposition is now pushing for Maduro's removal and the release of scores of political prisoners.

"President Maduro has called his supporters to march in some of the same places that the opposition had already targeted their supporters", David Smilde, a senior fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America, said on Wednesday.

Analysts say there is less likelihood of a coup against Maduro because Chavez launched a broad purge of the armed forces following his brief ouster.

Mr Maduro says that beneath a peaceful facade, the protests are little more than opposition efforts to start a coup to end socialism in Venezuela.

As tensions have mounted, the government has used its almost-complete control of Venezuela's institutions to pursue its opponents.

Seven protesters have been killed in demonstrations against Maduro's government, the BBC reported. It was unclear how many remained in custody. He has also warned that an opposition government would slash social benefits like healthcare for the poor and subsidized food.

Marchers in the opposition demonstration in Caracas included Liliana Machuca, who earns about $20 a month holding two jobs teaching literature.

"They've got the right to march but marching isn't burning stuff, throwing rocks", said Jahil Marcano, a 48-year-old construction worker who had joined the pro-government rally. The time has come for the fight, the time has come to define the destiny of the country, we are at crucial times to decide the fate of our people and I will be in the front'.

In the same poll, 91 percent of Venezuelans said the country's economy is "getting worse", compared to 5 percent who said the economy is "getting better".
