Theresa May wins Parliament's backing to hold snap polls on June 8

After addressing a rowdy session of the House of Commons, Ms May won the support of 522 lawmakers in the 650-seat parliament for an election on June 8th, an easy victory for the prime minister who could see her majority increase by at least 100 seats in the poll.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, who faced Mrs May when they were rival candidates at the 1992 general election in North West Durham, said: "The Prime Minister and I, back in 1992, debated publicly, forcibly and amicably when we were both candidates together".

Theresa May easily cleared the hurdle needed under the Fixed Term Parliament Act to bring the poll forward from the scheduled date of 2020.

Yesterday being interviewed on College Green Labour's Shadow Home Secretary, Diane Abbott, reminded viewers that voters will have a binary choice on Thursday June 8th between "Theresa May's Britain" or "Jeremy Corbyn's Britain".

A big election year for Europe just got bigger. "They are wrong", she said.

Corbyn said years of Conservative austerity had led to falling living standards and called May "a prime minister who can't be trusted".

"The president considers that the real political negotiations on article 50 with the United Kingdom will start after the elections foreseen for the 8th of June", Schinas told a press conference in Brussels.

Who can blame U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May for calling an election now, as her own Conservative party mandarins have been urging?

"It was with reluctance that I decided the country needs this election, but it is with strong conviction that I say it is necessary to secure the strong and stable leadership the country needs to see us through Brexit and beyond", May said. "There won't be an early election", she vowed a week after the Brexit vote.

MPs clear way for UK general election on June 8
May's Conservatives now hold 330 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons. The election gives the British people the chance to change direction.

May, Britain's second female prime minister, also has strong popular support for her handling of the political natural disaster unleashed by Brexit.

She said on Tuesday she had "reluctantly" come to the decision to call for an early election because of political division in Westminster, suggesting that opposition parties were trying to thwart her plans for leaving the EU.

Initially, EU officials had said that the talks could start in late May once a detailed negotiating mandate had been agreed among the EU's 27 other members.

Riding high in the opinion polls, May is seeking to increase her slim majority of 17 in the 650-seat Commons before the battles begin with the European Union over Britain's exit bill and future trade and immigration ties.

He challenged her to defend her record by taking part in TV debates, which she has so far refused to do.

"We won't be doing television debates", May said, adding that politicians should spend election campaigns "out and about" meeting voters.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon seemed to take on this line of argument by describing May's decision "a huge political miscalculation".

Unlike May, her predecessor David Cameron took part in high-profile election debates in 2010 and 2015.

May made a unexpected announcement Tuesday that she would seek a "snap" election less than halfway through her government's five-year term, with the aim of gaining a stronger mandate for the country's historic withdrawal from the European Union.
