U.S. House panel to hold hearing on consumer airline issues

United boss Oscar Munoz faced calls to quit after a video emerged of David Dao being wrenched from his seat to make room for crew members on the flight from Chicago on April 10.

CEO Oscar Munoz said yesterday that he takes full responsibility "for making this right", and he promised more details later this month after United finishes a review of its policies on overbooked flights.

Mr Munoz and other executives vowed to treat customers with dignity, and said that what happened to Dr Dao will never happen again. Dao's attorney said it was likely he would sue over the incident, in which Dao lost two front teeth, broke his nose and suffered a concussion. So it does seem clear that the title is created to capitalize on the recent United Airlines incident, bringing a more light-hearted take to what was otherwise, a very serious issue.

She declined to say who would testify for United.

In United's first-quarter earnings call this week, company executives again apologised to Dao and United customers.

"There was never a consideration for firing an employee or anyone around it", Munoz told Wall Street analysts on a Tuesday conference call.

But Mr Tillerson repeated the administration's new belief that "the reign of the Assad family is coming to an end". Secretary Tillerson: The final outcome does not provide for a role for Assad in the future governance of #Syria .

Airline President Scott Kirby told analysts and reporters that it is too early to tell whether the Dao incident has hurt bookings on the carrier.

United Airlines published first-quarter financial results on April 17, posting its first-quarter net income at 96 million dollars, diluted earnings per share at 0.31 dollars, pre-tax earnings at 145 million dollars and pre-tax margin at 1.7 percent.

Munoz said that the response to a letter that the CEO sent to a group of United's "most loyal customers" was positive.

United Airlines is set to testify at a U.S. House Transportation Committee after a video emerged of a passenger being violently dragged off an overbooked flight.

Because the incident aboard United Express Flight 3411 was a systemic problem, the company won't fire anyone in management - including Munoz - or its rank-and-file workers. Announcements, if they were made at all, would regularly give the wrong platform for a departing train so that passengers would scramble back and forth from one side of the station to the next in the hope of being at the right place at the right time.
