UK's Labour vows to take on 'cosy cartel' that protects wealthy

But, while May is trying to focus the election debate on Brexit, Corbyn is looking to harness the powerful anti-establishment mood revealed by the European Union referendum, which has roots stretching back to the 2007-9 financial crisis.

The political considerations are many.

May, who has described herself as "not a showy politician", said she would rather talk directly to voters.

SNP Westminster leader Angus Robertson called on the Prime Minister to condemn newspaper headlines suggesting the election was an opportunity to "crush the saboteurs" of Brexit.

"Now we are not sure that there are many people who think Labour will be in a position on their own or with anyone else to form a Government".

Speaking to The Sun, Mrs May said: "What I hope comes out of the election is support from the public to say we agree with their plan for Brexit, so that when I go into Europe I've got that backing of the British people".

Peers would also be forced to back the priorities under the Salisbury Convention, which means that the Lords will not try and vote down government plans mentioned in an election manifesto. With opponents continually questioning whether the Brexit that the government was embarking on was the one that the people of Britain had signed up for, this would have left her and her government particularly vulnerable. May tackle those challenges, giving some much-needed authority to the Brexit process. Of particular significance to India will be Ms. Efforts by the opposition, the House of Lords, and even some within her own Cabinet to persuade her that global students shouldn't be included in net migration figures have proved unsuccessful, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd suggesting a year ago that a further tightening of policy when it came to worldwide students was on the cards.

O'Reilly leaves Fox News amid harassment claims

Mr Corbyn said Mrs May's decision had given voters the chance "to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first", while Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron said the election provided an opportunity to block "a disastrous hard Brexit".

Piers Corbyn accused the corporation of a series of cover ups to protect the establishment - that included making attacks on his brother - but insisted Labour could still win a "reasonable" majority.

On Tuesday, Farron said that "if you want to avoid a disastrous hard Brexit, if you want to keep Britain in the single market, if you want a Britain that is open, tolerant and united, this is your chance". TV debates don't have a long history in British politics, but were a feature of the last two elections, in 2010 and 2015.

While promising to run a "positive and optimistic campaign", she said the choice at the election was between her "strong and stable leadership" or a "coalition of chaos" led by Mr Corbyn. The revival of the Liberal Democrats' fortunes will also add to the uncertainty. The Lib Dems now have just nine seats in Parliament.

Ms. May would undoubtedly have had Scotland in mind when she opted for the general election. "In terms of Scotland, this move is a huge political miscalculation by the Prime Minister", declared First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, who accused the Prime Minister of putting her party's interests ahead of the country with the election announcement.

With May seen winning a new five-year mandate and boosting her majority in parliament by perhaps 100 seats, the pound held close to six-and-a-half month highs on hopes she may be able to clinch a smoother, more phased departure from the European Union and minimize damage to the United Kingdom economy.
