Under Fire for Violent Videos, Facebook Wants to Move Into 'Augmented Reality'

Speaking at the developers event in San Jose, California, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook's new Camera Effects Platform, which is created to giving developers the power to build AR tools.

Facebook said it will add more features depending on feedback from the beta version.

Zuckerberg says in the future, thousands of AR effects in Facebook Stories will be added for users to enjoy.

Have you noticed that most Facebook apps these days have a camera button built in? They could involve store deals, Global Positioning System directions, even "souvenirs"-things other Facebook users leave in the virtual world that overlays their real world".

After OT loss, Rangers look to regroup at home
The veteran ended up redirecting Radulov's feed past goal Henrik Lundqvist to send the Bell Centre crowd of 21,288 into a frenzy. And when Alexander Radulov scored 18:34 into overtime, it gave a whole new look to its playoff series with the New York Rangers.

At launch, Facebook has signed up select beta partners at launch including Electronic Arts (for Mass Effect: Andromeda), GIPHY, Manchester United, Nike, Real Madrid, TripIt and Warner Bros (for Justice League) for its AR Studio tool.

"Augmented reality will let us mix the digital and the physical", Zuckerberg said in his keynote address to 4000 developers, "and that will make our physical reality better". You can check out the Frame Studio tool right now on Facebook. Facebook's camera will soon be able to recognize objects like coffee mug and other objects. Other major companies dipping into AR include Microsoft, Google and Apple. AR Studio can be used to create masks, effects and animated frames that react to movement and interactions during Facebook live videos.

Facebook are allowing developers to sign up and begin developing content for Camera Effects as of this week. Most current-gen smartphones can handle AR just fine thanks to their advanced computing power and cameras on both the front and back. So Messenger is launching a discovery tab and new QR codes that directly put users in conversation with a bot. "QR codes are big in messaging apps in Asia but haven't caught on here in the United States, including when Messenger has tried them before". The company also plans to provide related effects to users. To demonstrate, Zuckerberg revealed a visual concept showing the Facebook camera recognizing a number of objects in real-time, making it an interactive item like a green plant sprout flowers, or a real-world bottle of wine displaying extra information like its vintage and location of production.
