United Airlines Is Changing Its Customer Displacement Policies Following The Recent Debacle

United Airlines has updated its policy to no longer allow crew members to displace passengers who are already seated on a plane.

The new policy comes almost a week after a passenger, Dr. David Dao, was forcibly removed from an overbooked United flight from Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

Now crew members who need to fly must book their seats an hour before departure, the company said in an internal email late Friday. United said the change is an initial step as it reviews policies in order to "deliver the best customer experience".

United Airlines has changed its rule on commuting employees boarding its flights while not on duty after an incident which saw a passenger dragged off an overbooked flight in Chicago. Dao suffered concussion, a broken nose and two lost teeth, according to one of his lawyers on Thursday.

Other airlines have not said whether they will increase their compensation limits to displaced passengers.

In the press conference, Demetrio made several statements concerning how airlines treat passengers.

It's worth noting that this change doesn't mean a passenger couldn't be bumped off a flight due to overbooking.

Video shows he was forcibly removed from the airline by heavy-handed Chicago Aviation Security police officers. Eventually, United's chief executive, Oscar Munoz, apologized for the whole fiasco and promised it wouldn't happen again, but by that point, no one really wanted to hear it. On Wednesday, participants in a Morning Consult poll were asked to pick a United or American Airlines flight between New York City and Chicago.

The treatment of Dao sparked worldwide outrage, as well as multiple apologies from the carrier, and raised questions about overbooking policies of airlines.

Following the incident, which saw the company's market share value fall some US$800 million overnight, the airline has gone in crisis mode, introducing new policies to prevent a repeat of the episode.
