Kenyan runners swept the Boston Marathon on Monday, with Edna Kiplagat winning the women's title and Geoffrey Kirui taking the men's race.

On Monday, Switzer, now 70, ran the Boston Marathon again.

In the women's competition, runners to watch include Kenya's Gladys Cherono, who won the 2015 Berlin Marathon, and Edna Kiplagat, who finished second in Chicago a year ago.

And on Monday in Boston, Switzer was back - this time as a celebrated guest.

Half a century later, Switzer was given the 261 as a bid number to run and her celebrated number was otherwise retired.

Fans crowded the brief ceremony, hugging and posing afterward for pictures with Switzer, a women's running pioneer.

"People have such an appreciation for what running has done for them and how it's changed their lives", said Switzer, who named her 261 Fearless foundation after the bib number that was almost torn from her back on the marathon course.

U.S. turning Korean peninsula into world's biggest hotspot warns United Nations ambassador
President Donald Trump's claims that it had been heading to the Korean peninsula were initially dismissed, then later confirmed. The announcement followed an inaugural meeting Tuesday of the U.S. -Japan Economic Dialogue in Tokyo chaired by visiting U.S.

The elite come to Boston because it's prestigious, and so does everyone else who finishes hours later, including Deborah Touchy, who was escorted down the last mile by a woman she didn't even know. What happened next changed running forever.

Switzer was a 20-year-old student at Syracuse when she entered the men-only Boston Marathon in 1967, using her initials on the registration form. A photo sequence her fighting off a man who tried to forcibly remove her from the race has since become one of the most enduring images in the history of the marathon.

"It was the worst thing in my life at the time".

"She always said that I would be a marathoner like her one day", said Hasay, "and so I just kept telling myself, 'Good job Paula, good job Paula, ' and so that kind of helped me get through some of the tough times".

Semple's lunge at Switzer was captured by national news photographers. "And it was very wonderful", Touchy said.

For Kirui and Kiplagat this was their first Boston Marathon race. In the women's wheelchair race, Switzerland's Manuela Schar was first across the line in 1 hour, 28 minutes and 16 seconds.

There was a sense of calm in the 25-year old's demeanor despite the emotional toil she has endured over the past six months.
