Ann Coulter vows to speak at Berkeley despite cancellation

University administrators had said a day earlier that they could not let Coulter speak because of security threats.

The decisions by Berkeley to cancel both events involving high-profile conservatives were especially notable given the campus's role during the 1960s and 1970s as the birthplace of the Free Speech Movement and its long tradition of social protest. Just this week, Auburn University tried to prevent Richard Spencer, a white nationalist, from appearing, but let him speak when a federal judge gave the university no choice.

The administrator said school officials have informed the Berkeley College Republicans, who originally invited Coulter to campus, and Coulter team.

University officials said they had learned that some of the groups that took part in recent clashes planned to target Coulter's appearance. "But we also have an unqualified focus on safety of our students". Berkeley had, until the protest turned violent, defended the right of Yiannopoulos to appear.

University of California students and sympathizers of the Free Speech Movement are sealed off behind police in front of Sproul Hall in Berkeley on December 3, 1964.

Reich, in his own statement, also let it be known what he thought of the speaker, while defending her right to speak, "How can students understand the vapidity of Coulter's arguments without being allowed to hear her make them, and question her about them?" But she added two stipulations that called the bureaucrats' bluff that this was about public safety rather than the suppression of the free speech of conservatives.

"I'm speaking at Berkeley on April 27th, as I was invited to do and have a contract to do", Coulter tweeted.

The Party has been facing the hard task of securing votes from those who did not vote for Brexit in last year's referendum. She had also backed the Remain camp in the June 23 referendum, but kept a low profile throughout a polarising campaign.

Coulter, who's an outspoken President Trump supporter, vowed to show up for the original date even before the school offered to reschedule.

The conservative Coulter, who frequently attacks liberals, was bound to draw ire at the notably liberal college campus.

At a news conference in Haas Paviliion, officials made clear that their concerns over Coulter's appearance were entirely about the safety of the campus community, not the views of the outspoken pundit. "Simply put, she would astonish us if she sparked meaningful dialogue on campus".

"We realize that this is disappointing news, but the good news is that UCPD and Student Affairs remain firmly committed to working with you to find an alternative time and date for Ms. Coulter to come speak here at Berkeley".

The University of California, Berkeley, has reversed its decision to cancel an appearance by conservative firebrand Ann Coulter.

Berkeley has been the site of clashes between far-right and far-left protesters, most recently at a rally last weekend called in support of President Donald Trump in downtown Berkeley.

Dirks said that's the reason why he had instructed his staff to find "an appropriate, protectable" space.
