British lawmakers back PM May, give resounding approval to snap election

British Prime Minister Theresa May stirred jeers and cheers in Parliament on Wednesday after her surprise call for early elections as the government seeks more clout before hard talks on Britain's break from the European Union.

Britain's Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced Tuesday a snap general election to be held on June 8.

This gives the PM her two-thirds majority, which is required to call an election under the Fixed Term Parliament Act.

"We will be fighting for every vote, while the right honorable gentleman [Corbyn] would bankrupt our economy, weaken our defences and is simply not fit to lead." .

The chief of the EU executive Jean-Claude Juncker and British Prime Minister Theresa May had a phone call on Tuesday evening, following May's call for early elections in June, a European Commission spokesman told a news conference.

The next general election wasn't due until 2020, one year after Brexit talks are scheduled to conclude.

The prime minister's own personal ratings also dwarf those of Corbyn, with 50 per cent of those asked saying she would make the best prime minister.

Parliament is expected to be dissolved on May 3, as British law mandates the dissolution must happen 25 working days before a general election.

Had she not called an early election, she argued, the "crucial" Brexit negotiations would have occurred in the years before the scheduled 2020 election and potentially put Britain at a disadvantage with European Union negotiators - who have signaled that they are unwilling to offer Britain generous concessions on the break over issues including trade and immigration.

The opposition Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats welcomed May's surprise call on April 18 for the early poll, while the Scottish National Party (SNP) signaled that its deputies would abstain in the vote.

Tillerson: Iran Remains a Leading State Sponsor of Terror
Obama and others argued it was narrowly tailored to take the most unsafe prospect - a nuclear-armed Iran - off the table. Much of the Iran policy review will rely on resources and capacities that the previous White House sidelined.

The goal of the election, May said, is to give Britain the "strong and stable leadership it deserves" following the decision to leave the European Union.

She insists an early election would provide "certainty and stability" in the negotiations, which will now start after the vote.

European Union officials say Britain's surprise election will not interrupt the bloc's preparations for Brexit talks - though they will slightly delay the start of negotiations.

May also told the BBC that her political opponents were intent on "frustrating the Brexit process" - even after Parliament authorized divorce talks with the EU.

Mrs May faced taunts of "frit" from Labour backbenchers at Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons, as leader Jeremy Corbyn accused her of running scared of scrutiny on her record.

Miller said: "We will support candidates who campaign for a real final vote on Brexit, including rejecting any deal that leaves Britain worse off".

May is adamant she will not take part in a televised debate in the run-up to the vote, despite numerous MPs calling for her to do so.

Mrs May added: "I believe in campaigns where politicians actually get out and about and meet with voters". If Labour sticks to local issues, while May keeps "banging on about Europe"-as the much-reviled, Tory right-wingers are notorious for doing-the prime minister could find her support among the middle classes ebbing away.

A prime minister who can not be trusted".
