Cameroon Orders Internet Restored to Restive Anglophone Region

THE African Union has been petitioned to intervene and address the deteriorating relations between English-speaking Cameroon regions and the government.

Internet services had been cut off in both regions in January after protests against political and economic discrimination by the country's French-dominated government. Many people took to online platforms to share their opinions which resulted in the government threatening the public with jail time if caught sharing "false information".

Pulling the plug on the internet was a particular blow for Cameroon's 'Silicon Mountain, ' as it was called locally, a cluster of tech start-ups in the region that had been flourishing prior to the crackdown. "It's disruptive to everyone", said Churchill Mambe, speaking earlier this month.

He told AFP he even had to move offices 50 kilometres (over 30 miles) down the coast towards Bonako, in a neighbouring region, to access the internet.

According to "Internet without Borders" the shutdown has cost businesses in the affected areas an estimated amount of $723,000. The origins of the unrest can be traced backed Cameroon's colonial past a century ago. The anglophone regions are calling for authorities to stop imposing French on their educational and legal systems.

Iran Approves Six Presidential Candidates, Blocks Ahmadinejad
Ahmadinejad , who left office in 2013, had been very publicly warned by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei not to run for another term. Rouhani engineered Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers that secured removal of most of global sanctions against Tehran .

Note that the Anglophone regions account for just 20% of the Cameroon's 23 million population.

Schools and the courts have been closed since November, with leaders arrested and being tried on charges of terrorism.

At least six protestors have been shot dead and hundreds arrested prompting criticism from human rights organizations.

Some activists as at Thursday evening confirmed that their internet services were back as promised by the government.
