Canada minister they're looking forward to Trump trade talks

"We go to the table with Donald Trump right now with one hand, one arm, tied behind our backs", she said, complaining that supply management costs consumers more, prevents producers from tapping into foreign markets, and hinders Canada's ability to negotiate trade deals in other economic sectors.

New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay told Reuters in an email his government was assessing the "WTO-consistency" of Canada's dairy industry policy, and had raised concern with the Canadian government.

The dairy industry in the European Union, which has two-thirds of Canada's 20,412 tonne cheese import allocation, signed a letter last September along with Australian, New Zealand, U.S. and Mexican peers, demanding the start of a WTO dispute. "There are a lot of people in the middle class there that are looking to move to cities, and my message to them is that wood is in vogue in Canada".

But Canada's trade policy is having the most impact.

-Canada trade relations. Trump, who was elected with the help of strong rural support, has pledged to renegotiate NAFTA to help US industry.

U.S. President Donald Trump set his sights on Canada's supply-managed dairy industry.

Ambassador David MacNaughton said in a letter Tuesday night to the governors of Wisconsin and NY that Canada is aware of their letter to Trump asking him to address Canada's dairy practices.

The ambassador's letter comes after Trump weighed-in on the dispute during a visit to a Kenosha manufacturing company Tuesday.

Abe sends offering to shrine honoring Japan's war dead
Seiichi Eto, an aide to the prime minister and an upper house lawmaker belonging to Abe's Liberal Democratic Party, also made a visit.

NAFTA talks won't begin until after a mandatory 90-day consultation period with the U.S. Congress. Trump's nominee for the cabinet position of trade representative has not yet been confirmed.

The latest report by the United States Trade Representative on the trade barriers faced by the USA singled out the Class 7 changes as a potential problem.

The specific program in question is the National Ingredients Strategy, a type of pricing program that gives incentives for Canadian dairy processors that steer them away from purchasing USA dairy products.

"Canada does not accept the contention that Canada's dairy policies are the cause of financial loss for dairy farmers in the United States", MacNaughton said.

New Brunswick, Quebec, British Columbia and Ontario producers were all represented.

There's also what's called ultra filtered milk that is not subject to a tariff.

Forces in the worldwide dairy industry are also at play, says von Massow. Russian Federation is buying less milk from the Europe because of sanctions, and China is buying less milk, which affects everybody. They'll continue to provide a market for milk supplied by Cayuga County-area dairy farmers. It had been duty free.

Trump made his most critical comments yet about Canadian trade by saying Thursday that the US can't let Canada or anybody else take advantage and "do what they did to our workers and to our farmers".
