Ducks rest up and await winner of Oilers-Sharks

Anaheim Ducks goalie John Gibson, left, deflects a shot from Calgary Flames' Mikael Backlund, of Sweden, during the second period of Game 4 in a first-round NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoff series Wednesday, Apr.

After wrapping up their 4-0 Western Conference first-round win over the Flames, the Ducks face the victor of the series between the Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharks, who are tied 2-2, in the second round of the playoffs.

Selke "finalists" set • Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Kesler is one of the three top vote-getters for the Selke Trophy, awarded annually by the National Hockey League "to the forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game". "But I think he's not the only desperate one that's going to be out there".

"You can't discredit the opposition", Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said.

ST. LOUIS - Charlie Coyle and Martin Hanzal scored in the first two periods and Devan Dubnyk made 28 saves to record his second career playoff shutout as Minnesota stayed alive in a first-round series with St. Louis.

Puck luck can come in many forms, including bad bounces, broken sticks, key injuries, missed calls, and hitting crossbars and goal posts. And I know, he wasn't there when they needed him most (game 4), but I think it's a little unfair to put all the blame on him. "We're going to try to do everything in our power to send a message and just make them a little nervous", Calgary rookie Matthew Tkachuk said during Tuesday's optional skate. That feeling that you got the job done, I think that's shared by every member of the hockey club and the organization. "If you keep thinking about it, you just dig yourself a hole". Elliott finished the night with two saves on three shots.

Brian Elliott. The Flames goaltender has gotten the nod for Game 4, and he'll need to step up big time in the face of an elimination game.

"I definitely want that opportunity for sure", Elliott said.

Daniel Ricciardo irritated by Lewis Hamilton's blocking tactic in Bahrain
Hamilton chased Vettel all the way to the end but was ultimately hampered by a mistake earlier in the race. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel.

It's going to be a long offseason for Flames fans and there are already a lot of questions about what the team will look like next year.

The Flames outplayed them the majority of Game 2, but a lucky deflection and a couple of undisciplined minors by Calgary late in the game allowed the Ducks to pull out the win at home.

The Flames didn't go away, though, despite being down 2-0 early. "When you review it and watch the tape, he did a heck of a job coming in and settling our group down".

Consider Game 3 at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday when the Flames ended the second period with a 4-2 lead. The Ducks are up 3-0 in the series and they have won six straight meetings with the Flames.

That's all you can really do. 43 seconds into the man-advantage, center Sean Monahan batted a waist-high puck into the net to get the Flames to within one goal. This is big for us.

Defenceman Sami Vatanen (upper body) participated in Anaheim's optional skate. Anaheim captain Ryan Getzlaf would then wrap up the game, and series, in the dying seconds of the game. But regardless of how he was beaten, it was clear Wednesday night Gulutzan's confidence in Elliott was gone.

Gulutzan's message to the Flames is to play without fear Wednesday. That's what we talked about at the start of the year, to give yourself a chance to win a Cup. Not only for us but for them personally, that they're not under the pressure to get back in with a game coming up on Friday or a game coming up on Sunday.
