Eminent: Son of Frankel impresses to win Craven Stakes at Newmarket

Eminent Won the Craven at Newmarket

Jim Crowley may have to forego the ride aboard Eminent in the English 2,000 Guineas, despite partnering the son of legendary racehorse Frankel to a commanding victory in the Craven Stakes here on Thursday.

In fact, he is bigger and the late Sir Henry Cecil, trainer of Frankel, would no doubt have been an admirer of Eminent, trained on the same Newmarket trial grounds by Martyn Meade.

Larchmont Lad did not win beyond Group Three level last year but he must be respected as he attempts to give the Richard Hannon stable a fourth Craven victor in five years, not least as the trainer's string has started the season strongly.

With Group One victor Rivet taking the group along on the near side, Eminent was brought through with a strong-looking run by Jim Crowley towards the centre of the track.

Rivet stuck to his task gamely but it was another once-raced youngster, Saeed bin Suroor's Benbatl, who briefly looked the biggest threat. "I was almost at the road by the time we pulled up, not through him being keen but because he has such a big stride".

Frankel, 2000 Guineas victor in 2011, was retired to stud the following year after winning all 14 of his races.

Documentary delves into life of music pioneer Clive Davis
Davis' most famous discovery, Whitney Houston, was also acknowledged by way of a medley sung by Jennifer Hudson . But I wasn't going to miss this", she said.

"I'd hope there's improvement there. He's very special", said Meade.

Crowley said: "He's the real deal".

"He only hit top gear as he went past the line".

Rivet's win at the same track previous year makes him the form choice, but his sole disappointment in 2016 was his fifth of seven behind Churchill in the Dewhurst Stakes on this course. "I knew I'd got a good tow off Rivet as I knew he'd go forward and what I like about him is that I was first out of the stalls (and) I was able to take him back".

The unbeatable colt has already made his mark as a stallion with his first crop and Eminent possesses the same imposing physique of his sire.
