Feds eye cannabis tracking system in legalized regime

While US attorney general Jeff "Джеффри" Sessions is busy spreading phony anecdotes about the deadly effects of marijuana and pining for the days of the Reagan drug war, 61% of Americans think is should be legal for recreational purposes, according to a CBS poll released today.

The position is a reversal from the Obama administration's stance, which laid out in an official memo that the federal government wouldn't interfere in states where non-medical use of marijuana is allowed.

OR is among the few states in the country where adults can legally buy and use marijuana for recreational purposes, but weed's future legal status there and elsewhere has been called into question upon President Trump's appointment this year of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a Republican who has spoken out adamantly against legalizing marijuana, medical or otherwise.

"From a stigmatized, unsafe drug bought in the shadows, to an accepted treatment for various ills, to a widely accepted recreational outlet, marijuana has made it to the mainstream", Tim Malloy, assistant director of the poll, said in a written statement. 52 percent of those who use marijuana are millennials.

Instead of arresting people for smoking pot, 69 per cent of people polled would rather drug abuse be treated as an addiction and mental health issue.

Peter Bensinger, a former administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, cited federal statistics showing marijuana use among teenagers initially increased 20 percent in the first two years after legalization in Colorado, compared with the two years prior. This sentiment has increased each year we've measured it since 2013, with the turning point to majority support coming in 2014.

Though medical marijuana dispensaries are now in operation, retail sales in MA won't become legal until at least July 2018.

The federal government is under fire from the opposition Conservatives for failing to disclose the cost of a planned cannabis tracking system - just one of a host of proposed changes to be ushered in along with the legalization of marijuana.

Among those who think marijuana should be illegal, only half think the federal government should be involved with the states.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asserted a connection between marijuana and violent crime, but few Americans see it that way: just 23 percent think legalizing pot increases violent crime, while almost as many think legal marijuana decreases it. Republicans and voters over 65 years old are the only listed party, gender, education, age or racial groups to oppose legalized marijuana... Among active marijuana users, 40 percent identified themselves as Democrats, 32 percent as Republicans and 24 percent independents.

Most of the public also believes that marijuana is not physically or mentally harmful, and believe it's safer than alcohol, according to the poll.

Who supports it, and who's tried it?

Support for marijuana legalization has risen among all age groups, particularly those under 55.
