Fresno shooter gave police detailed account of slayings

Police in Fresno, California revealed new details Wednesday on the "hate crime" shooting that killed three people in just minutes on Tuesday morning and what allegedly inspired the suspect to commit the murders.

Kori Muhammad, a black man charged in the shooting murders of three white men in Fresno, California, will also face hate crime enhancements, according to police.

Dyer says Muhammad went with officers to the Motel 6, where he is accused of killing unarmed security guard Carl Williams.

Police had been looking for Muhammad in the Williams killing, and Muhammad said seeing his own name and picture in a press release Tuesday morning helped spur the rampage.

When he learned he was wanted in the security guard killing, Muhammad made a decision to take out as many other white men as possible before he was caught, Dyer said.

Police say Muhammad randomly targeted white men he encountered in a tree-lined Fresno neighborhood, firing 17 rounds within a few minutes before running out of ammunition, police said. Prosecutors say they are holding off on three additional charges while investigators piece together their case.

Zackary Randalls, a 34-year-old father of two young children, was killed.

"This is exclusively based on race", Dyer told reporters. He fired one round into a vehicle that drove by, but then realized the people in the auto were Latina and stopped shooting. He was expected to be charged with four counts of murder and arraigned Friday.

"What Kori (Muhammad) said was that he fired his weapon at Carl Williams because he felt that Carl Williams had disrespected him", Dyer said.

Muhammad told detectives that he is Muslim but hadn't been to mosque in 20 years and prays to numerous gods, Dyer said.

On Tuesday, police said, he acted on that hatred.

"Kori Muhammad is not a terrorist, but he is a racist, and he is filled with hate, and he set out this week to kill as many people as he could", Dyer told a news conference on Wednesday. Carl Williams told her he loved her, too.

Police have arrested Kori Ali Muhammad, who is black, saying he singled out white victims and killed them at random.

Randalls was in a training program for Pacific Gas & Electric and doing a ride-along Tuesday when he was gunned down. The driver wasn't hit and sped toward the police department, but his partner couldn't be saved. Computers and technicians at a California-based center distinguish the sound of gunfire from other noises and triangulate the shots, in much the same way that cell towers are used to zero in on the location of a cellphone.

"He wouldn't want people to be divided by this", Valencia told the Fresno Bee. Muhammad gave himself up not far from where the last victim was killed in front of Catholic Charities.

The Fresno Bee reports (http://bit.ly/2pAwbZ4 ) the faith leaders also gathered outside City Hall earlier Tuesday to denounce the violence and offer prayers for the families of the victims.

In the past, Muhammad posted messages on social media that referred to white people as "devils". The fanatic black nationalist told investigators he wanted to slaughter as many whites as he could.

Jackson's roommate said they were waiting for a bus home after going to the bank and then stopping to use the bathroom at Catholic Charities.

Mr Muhammad, who was born as Kori Taylor, was imprisoned in 2005 for gun and cocaine charges.

"On what appeared to be Muhammad's Facebook page, he repeatedly posted "#LetBlackPeopleGo" and encouraged "black warriors" to "mount up".

He also "suffered auditory hallucinations and had at least two prior mental health hospitalizations", according to court documents.
