Handel Celebrates 6th District Results, Gets Ready For Runoff

By a number of factors, it appeared that Democrats were extremely close to winning their first battle against Republicans since losing the White House to President Donald Trump in November; however, late Tuesday night, their candidate for Georgia's 6th Congressional District failed to reach a 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff with a Republican challenger.

Roughly five hours after polling locations closed, major networks began projecting that Georgia's 6th District U.S. House special election would be heading toward a runoff on June 20.

While Ossoff and national Democrats acknowledged that they hoped to win the seat outright Tuesday due to the crowded and fractured GOP field, Ossoff will likely enter the runoff with Handel as a slight favorite.

As the Washington Examiner writes, the race for the congressional seat that Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price vacated is seen as an indicator of how the 2018 congressional elections could go.

Novice Democrat candidate Jon Ossoff fell short of pulling off a major upset in a congressional election in Atlanta, Georgia. On Tuesday, however, voters in the affluent Atlanta suburbs turned out for a special election to hand a 30-year-old Democrat a whopping 30-point lead over his closest competitor.

In addition, Ossoff has also used anti-Trump sentiment, with the slogan "Make Trump Furious", to power his campaign, during which he also focused on the growing worry among Republicans that his victory could have a chilling effect on congressional races in future.

Ossoff earned 48.1 percent in Tuesday's election to replace former Republican Rep. Tom Price, barely eclipsing Clinton's performance, according to Real Clear Politics.

Republicans in the race are split among Trump supporters and candidates trying to hold the president at arm's length. Crediting himself, Trump added, "Glad to be of help!" "Partly because I think he will insist on it", said Dr. Kerwin Swint of Kennesaw State University.

He will compete in a run-off with Republican candidate Karen Handel, who finished second with 19.5 per cent of the vote.

Once Ossoff's number had dipped below 50 percent, Korman gloated a bit, posing in front of a giant Handel banner. "Do they get behind her or do they not?"

The FEC reports for Ossoff are only current through March 29 - 20 days before the election.

Press secretary Sean Spicer said the results marked a "big loss" as they had been anticipating a large win.

He also recorded robocalls warning voters that Ossoff would derail the Republican agenda if elected. "We have defied the odds. shattered expectations", Ossoff told supporters, adding that they'd "carry us to victory" in June.
