Iran not pulling weight on 2015 nuclear deal

At a joint news conference on Thursday, he said Iran was failing to fulfill the "spirit" of its nuclear deal with world powers and that the 2015 agreement shouldn't have been signed.

President Donald Trump listens as Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni speaks during a news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, April 20, 2017.

President Donald Trump has previously described the agreement between the United Nations and Iran as "the worst deal ever negotiated", and he is now reviewing whether or not to lift sanctions on Iran in light of the current nuclear deal.

Secretary of State Tillerson wrote in a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan late on Tuesday that Iran remains a "leading state sponsor of terror, through many platforms and methods", and that the National Security Council-led interagency review will evaluate whether the sanctions relief granted Iran through the deal is in in fact in the USA national interest.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Wednesday that Tehran has so far met its obligations, but that the deal could only delay Iran's development of a nuclear weapon. "We're analysing it very, very carefully and will have something to say about it in the not-too-distant future".

The historic deal between Iran and six major powers restricts Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of global oil and financial sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

He said that the nuclear deal is another example of the "failed approach" that has resulted in the current North Korea threat.

Tillerson's statement came hours after the U.S. State Department confirmed that Iran is continuing to comply with the terms of the nuke deal. As I said, it really does not achieve the objective.

Sunderland 2-2 West Ham highlights
With the home crowd on their side, the Black Cats managed to come back from one down in the first half with a goal by Khazri. The club's goal drought ended after 701 tortuous minutes when Wahbi Khazri's corner caught the win and flew in.

The Trump administration now says it is reviewing these accords.

"An unchecked Iran has the potential to travel the same path as North Korea and to take the world along with it", Mr Tillerson said.

On the climate agreement, the White House postponed a meeting Tuesday at which top aides were to have hashed out differences on what to do about the nonbinding global deal, forged in Paris in December 2015.

"#IranDeal is prudently confined to the nuclear issue, without entering other contentious issues, incl nefarious activities of US Govt", the Iranian top diplomat also twitted.

But US allies like Israel and Saudi Arabia were concerned the JCPOA does not shut down Iran's nuclear industry entirely nor forever, and Obama's domestic critics accused him of appeasing a terrorist state. "But at the same time, Washington will step up efforts to push back against Iran's ballistic missile program and support for terrorism in the region without violating the terms of the nuclear agreement", he said. It does not address Iran's backing of terrorism, and the US partners in brokering the deal - including western Europe, Russia, and China - would likely balk at making terrorism an issue after the fact. However, world leaders from German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Russian President Vladimir Putin have highlighted the need to preserve the Iran nuclear deal.

As president, Trump called it "one of the worst deals I've ever seen".

The National Security Council is currently midway in a policy review of the nuclear deal as well as the sanctions that are now suspended. That did no good for anyone because he demanded nothing in return from the bad guys, and the end of such foolhardy stances would be one of the best ways Trump and Rex Tillerson could usher in a new era of USA foreign policy.
