Iran reiterates commitment to nuclear deal

At a joint news conference on Thursday, he said Iran is failing to fulfil the "spirit" of its nuclear deal with world powers and that the 2015 agreement shouldn't have been signed. "It shouldn't have been negotiated the way it was negotiated".

Trump's comments came amid a series of highly critical remarks from top administration officials and rebuttals from Tehran over the 2015 deal, which requires Iran to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief from Western powers.

During his campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized the Iran nuclear deal, calling it "the worst deal ever negotiated".

"During the [nuclear deal] negotiations", recalled Parsi in the Times, "Zarif told me numerous times that he was frustrated that Washington didn't recognize that the nuclear deal could be a base rather than the ceiling for American-Iranian relations".

"The Trump administration has no intention of passing the buck to a future administration on Iran", he said at a hurriedly-convened press briefing. But Iran has not lived up to the spirit of the agreement.

"The Trump administration is now conducting a comprehensive review of our Iran policy", he added. It is the first update under the Trump administration. And if it came to that, a ground war against Iran would be far more hard than the ones we fought against Iraq, which is about one-third Iran's size.

"We are reviewing all the status of North Korea both in terms of state sponsorship of terrorism as well as all the other ways we can bring pressure to bear on the regime in Pyongyang to re-engage", said Tillerson.

The certification of Iran's compliance, which must be sent to Congress every 90 days, is the first issued by the Trump administration.

In addition, US President Donald Trump affirmed on Thursday that Iran "is not living up to the spirit" of the nuclear agreement, which he described as awful and badly negotiated.

The US State Department last month announced a range of new sanctions, including 11 specifically against companies or individuals for transfers of "sensitive items" to the Iranian ballistic missile programme. His administration did, however, try to bar Iranians from visiting or immigrating to the USA through a visa ban targeting six majority-Muslim countries.

"Iran is the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism and is responsible for intensifying multiple conflicts and undermining USA interests in countries such as Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Lebanon, and continuing to support attacks against Israel".

In a report by Express, it was mentioned that Tillerson made several more accusations against Iran, stating that the Islamic Republic supports terrorism, and even goes as far as providing weapons and financial aid to Hamas and other terror groups.

"The evidence is clear: Iran's provocative actions threaten the USA, the region and the world", he said.

Earlier in the week, James Mattis, the Defense Secretary, spoke in Saudi Arabia about the crisis in Yemen and Iran's role.
