Looters will have to return the loot, PM tweets over Mallya's arrest

Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, wanted by Indian security agencies in multi-million loan default case, has been arrested in London by Scotland Yard on Tuesday. The Metropolitan Police in a press release issued post the arrest said that Vijay Mallya, aged 61 was arrested on behalf of the Indian authorities in relation to accusations of fraud.

Mallya was arrested under an extradition warrant issued by the Indian authorities.

The owner of the Sahara Force India Formula One team has been arrested in London after India made an extradition request.

Scotland Yard on Tuesday arrested Vijay Mallya and produced him in a Wensminster court acting upon the CBI's extradition request.

Also in March past year, Mallya was blocked from receiving a $75 million severance payment from the British alcohol company Diageo, after banks and creditors demanded the money be used to settle some of his outstanding debt, reports the BBC. Earlier, on various occasions, India failed to secure extradition of some very high profile personalities like that of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, Navy war room leak suspect Ravishankaran and Purulia arms drop case accused Kim Davy.

2 officers killed in Paris attack; shooter 'neutralized'
One of the suspects had allegedly attempted to send members of Islamic State a video pledging allegiance or claiming an attack. He had been arrested in February on suspicion of plotting to kill police officers but released because of lack of evidence.

The court proceedings, however, will continue in the extradition case.

Mallya, in a message on Twitter, called the news of his arrest "usual Indian media hype". Asked about bringing other offenders to India, he said it is in process.

An Indian business tycoon wanted in his home country over fraud allegations has been bailed after appearing in court. In November, 2015, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley claimed that the total amount owed by Kingfisher owner is Rs 9,091.40 crore. Government had a year ago admitted that getting people extradited from the United Kingdom is an onerous task with continuation of death penalty in India and European Commission's provisions on human rights are acting as hurdles in acceding to these requests.

The Enforcement Directorate, which is probing the matter after it registered a money laundering case in January 2016, said it has attached properties of Mallya and his companies having market value more than Rs 8,000 crore.
