Maharashtra civic polls: BJP wins Latur, Chandrapur, Congress wrests Parbhani

The Congress won 28 seats which was sharp decline from its previous 49 in the last elections.

Along with Latur, Parbhani and Chandrapur Municipal Corporations also went to the poll on Wednesday.

In a major blow to Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has conquered Latur by winning as many as 38 seats in the Latur Municipal Corporation elections as reported by ibn Lokmat TV.

The AIMIM had contested the Latur Municipal Corporation elections in alliance with Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi and Shetkari Sangathna. It stated that BJP will win 179 out of the total 272 seats of the three municipal corporations of Delhi.

The counting is still in progress and the final results are likely to be out by evening on Friday. BJP had not won any seats in Latur in 2012 and yet came out tops by a convincing margin this time.

In Parbhani Municipal Corporation, Congress won 29 of 65 seats, the NCP 20, the BJP 8, Shiv Sena 6 while others were victorious at 2 seats.

Tagg Romney, Tom Glavine bid on Marlins
Marlins president David Samson said last week that negotiations were progressing with multiple groups interested. Of course, Glavine and Romney are not the only power duo to express interest in the Marlins.

In February, the BJP won 82 seats in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), just two short of its ally-turned-foe Shiv Sena's tally of 84 seats in the 227-member house.

"Chandrapur, Parbhani and Latur recorded 57 per cent, 70 per cent and 60 per cent voting, respectively". The stakes were especially high for the ruling BJP as it was not in power in any of these three corporations and was looking to make inroads.

Chandrapur is the home turf of senior BJP leader and Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar. The Congress had never lost the 70-member corporation since Independence. As many as 460 candidates were in the fray whose fates were decided by 3.02 lakh voters.

Nilangekar and the local Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh. Congress, which controls the corporation, had got a drubbing in the recent local body polls in Latur district.

Last year, trains carrying water pulled into Latur every day for almost four months as an intervention after a severe crisis in the area due to the monsoon failing for the fifth year. It was a test for district guardian minister and senior Sena leader Diwakar Raote.
