More Americans Than Ever Support Marijuana Legalization

From Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to Hippie Hill in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, marijuana enthusiasts observed their 4/20 holiday Thursday with public smoke-outs, parties and, yes, great deals on weed.

In the latest CBS News poll, 61% of Americans believe that smoking weed for fun should be legalized. This sentiment has increased each year we've measured it since 2013, with the turning point to majority support coming in 2014.

This is at odds with federal law, which still considers marijuana a schedule 1 drug, which is what it classifies those with "no now accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse", on the same level as heroin, LSD and peyote.

More than 60 per cent of respondents said they were in favour of the government's Cannabis Act proposed on April. 13, but two-thirds believed a successfully enacted legislation would not deter young people from increasing their marijuana consumption.

But the White House doesn't seem to agree.

The poll found that only 30% of respondents thought that The Trump Administration should be tougher than former President Barack Hussein Obama on enforcing federal laws against the recreational use of marijuana.

Legalisation also appears to be an economic hit.

Sixty percent of voters were in favor of making marijuana use legal and 34 percent were opposed, the Hamden-based university said Thursday. Experts predict the market could hit $21bn in sales by 2020 - bringing in millions in taxes for state governments, too.

Finally, Teachers Advisors LLC boosted its stake in shares of New Residential Investment Corp by 326.1% in the fourth quarter. Following the acquisition, the chief executive officer now owns 935,352 shares of the company's stock, valued at $14,030,280.

Brohl said that in Colorado, the roughly $200 million in tax revenue from more than $1 billion in sales previous year also provides $40 million for schools.

State Sen. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, raised his concerns about marijuana still being illegal under federal law.

Most people under 65 say they've tried marijuana, while only a quarter of those over 65 say they have have.

The federal government's plans for legalizing recreational marijuana has many would-be players looking to carve out a role for themselves in the emerging market, including pharmaceutical distributors who already ship drugs across the country. And on top of that, most people think marijuana is less unsafe than most other drugs, and only 23 percent think legalizing pot leads to an increase violent crime.

The Liberals clearly campaigned on legalizing marijuana and I have heard from several citizens who indicated this was one of the primary reasons they voted Liberal in the last election.

The drug remains classified as a controlled substance under federal law.

Support for legalization has risen among all age groups - particularly those under 55. The error for subgroups may be higher and is available by request.
