More young Americans are living with their parents

Almost 1-in-3 millennials live at home with one-in-four living idly, meaning they neither go to school or work. Overall, the share of 18-to-34-year olds living with their parents has climbed from 26% in 2005 to 34.1% in 2016.

At the bottom with the least amount of young people living with their parents was North Dakota with 14.1 percent, following by South Dakota (19.9 percent), Wyoming (20.9 percent), Nebraska (22.7 percent), Iowa (22.8 percent), Montana (24.1 percent), and Colorado (24.6 percent). In 2016, eight in 10 of Americans weren't married until they reached the age of 45.

"In 1975, only 25 percent of men, aged 25 to 34, had incomes of less than $30,000 per year".

The study shows a huge change from 1975, when most young Americans (57 per cent) were living with a spouse.

At the same time, he said, inequality of income has increased in general in the American economy, meaning that poorer workers - many of whom are younger - have not enjoyed the same progress as more affluent workers, who tend to be older.

The Census Bureau counted college students living in a dormitory as living in their parents' home.

As the report concludes: "If one theme describes how adulthood has changed over the last 40 years, it is growing complexity".

Soda and strokes linked
However, experts and health charities warned against reading too much into the new findings reported in Stroke . Excess sugar is known to have adverse effects on health.

More young people today live in their parents' home than in any other arrangement: 1 in 3 young people, or about 24 million 18- to 34-year-olds, lived in their parents' home in 2015.

Coming in second place is living with a spouse (27 per cent), followed by other (i.e. living with a roommate or other relatives, 21 per cent), living with a boyfriend or girlfriend (12 per cent) and living alone (8 per cent).

"It's hard to say that there's one experience for young adults that's capturing how they're all doing", said the Census's Jonathan Vespa, the author of the report.

The report also found another interesting development among young cohorts. "In 1975, only 25 percent of men, aged 25 to 34, had incomes of less than $30,000 per year". The percentage of employed men still remains higher, at 83.7%, but that statistic shows stagnation - in 1975, it was 84.9%.

By 2015, just 40.7 percent of young adults were living independently as single or married adults or with a romantic partner.

New Jersey took the top position with 46.9 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds staying at home, followed by CT (41.6 percent), NY (40.6 percent), Maryland (38.5 percent), Florida (38.3 percent), and California (38.1 percent). (See chart below). They included: New Jersey (46.9%), CT (41.6%), NY (40.6%) Maryland (38.5%), Florida (38.3%), California (38.1%), Rhode Island (37.1%), Pennsylvania (37.1%), MA (37.0%) and MS (36.8%).

Meanwhile, a majority of young people in the nation have ditched the centuries-long tradition of marrying and having kids early in life to pursue educational and professional goals. "For one, local labor and housing markets shape the ability of young people to find good jobs and affordable housing, which in turn affects whether and when they form their own households".
