Nikki Haley Slams UN Security Council for 'Israel-Bashing Sessions'

We need "to achieve justice based on the two-state solution in accordance with Security Council resolutions", said Egypt's Ambassador Amr Abdellatif Aboulatta, referring to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The call was made by Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, head of the Vietnam delegation to the UN, at the UN Security Council's open debate on the Middle East situation on April 20 in NY, the US. Iran joined the US and five other world powers in signing the 2015 deal, and Tillerson acknowledged in a message to Congress late Tuesday that Iran has delivered so far on its end of the deal.

"Iran remains a designated state sponsor of terrorism and we continue to enforce all sanctions related to Iran's support for terrorism and destabilizing activities in the region", Haley said.

"But that is one issue that surely has no lack of attention around here", Haley told the monthly council meeting on the Middle East.

He also said that the U.S. will decide whether to re-impose the economic sanctions that were eased as part of the nuclear deal.

British Ambassador Matthew Rycroft, the only council member to mention Iran, also accused that nation of playing "a destabilizing role in the region", especially in Syria. That's the way the Security Council has operated for years.

Haley said that, as a "transparency girl", she has also decided to make all but three of the month's Security Council meetings open to the press. "That is our goal for the Middle East open debate".

PA representative to the U.N., Riyad Mansour, expressed support for the prisoner hunger strike. Former President Barack Obama allowed the council to pass that measure in the closing weeks of his administration by having the US abstain rather than exercise its veto power.

Thursday's report will be presented by Nickolay Mladenov of Bulgaria, the UN's special coordinator for the Middle East peace process. He urged that Israel's settlement construction, which is illegal under global law, be halted. "They are working together to expand extremist ideologies in the Middle East", she said.

Attacker shoots 2 officers in Paris' Champs-Elysees district
This situation is unfolding only a few blocks away from the Elysée Palace - the official residence of the French president. The group identified the attacker as one of its soldiers naming him as Abu Yousif - the Belgian.

When asked by The Jerusalem Post if she worries that her pro-Israel approach could undermine a U.S. role in mediating a peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Haley said: "I don't worry about that, because I've been honest".

Moreover, Danon told the council, Iran not only threatens the region through proxies, it threatens the region directly with its continued ballistic missile tests, "which are in direct defiance this Council..."

Haley's testimony went beyond the bigger picture and narrowed nearly exclusively on Iran, accusing it of training deadly militias in Iraq and arming Houthi militants in Yemen, apparently part of a larger US strategy of putting Iran on notice that the Trump administration will not abide Iran's support of terror in the Middle East. Iranian troops and Hezbollah allies also have backed Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose government Trump targeted with cruise missiles this month after a chemical attack.

The UAE envoy, for instance, said that Iran's involvement in other regional conflicts posed "an existential threat to the Middle East". "We are moving from a position of accommodation to one of confrontation across multiple fronts".

The biggest challenge for now is building a consensus with the Security Council.

"We need to start with the chief culprit: Iran and its partner militia Hezbollah", she said, referring to the Lebanese Shi'ite militant group, which the USA has designated as a terrorist organization.

"Iran is using Hezbollah to advance its regional aspirations".
