North Korea coping with shortage of gasoline

U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis speaks with reporters after his arrival in Tel Aviv Wednesday

The long-scheduled tests in the Pacific are part of the US military's overall ballistic missile defense program to defend against North Korean or Iranian threats - but are, for now at least, aimed at ensuring the US can defend against a threat from North Korea, US defense officials said.

After Xi's return to China, Trump continued to pressure him.

The United States is aware of a higher-than-usual level of activity by Chinese bomber planes, signaling a possible heightened state of readiness, USA officials told Reuters on Thursday, but downplayed concerns and left open a range of possible reasons.

Analysts say critics may even include Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is said to be deeply frustrated with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's intransigence since taking power in 2011 following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il. "We are with you 100 percent".

"You're aware that the leader of North Korea again recklessly tried to provoke something by launching a missile", he recently told reporters. Lu said Beijing wants to resume the multi-party negotiations that ended in stalemate in 2009 and suggested that US plans to deploy a missile defense system in South Korea were damaging its relations with China.

US Vice-President Mike Pence has said North Korea should not test US President Donald Trump, whose "strength and resolve" had been shown by missile and bomb attacks in Syria and Afghanistan.

Foreign companies bringing tour groups to North Korea, however, have seen no dip in demand.

"I think Beijing is prepared to tighten the screws — but only so much".

The United States, Pence said, would be unwavering in its alliances and unyielding in its resolve. China has by far the most leverage over North Korea.

GM says it's stopped business in Venezuela
Foreign governments are also warning about the increasingly bellicose rhetoric and repressive stance of the government. Demonstrators are calling for the resignation of President Nicolas Maduro amid the country's ongoing economic crisis.

I might open the discussion with the experts this way: "For a quarter century, American presidents have sought to prevent North Korea from gaining the ability to strike the United States with nuclear weapons, and to prevent this without resorting to war".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Monday told a parliamentary session that diplomatic efforts were "important to maintain peace", but "dialogue for the sake of having dialogue is meaningless".

"If the United States dares opt for a military action. the DPRK is ready to react to any mode of war desired by the Americans", Kim told a news conference, using the abbreviation of the country's official name.

The Pentagon has not discussed which missile blew up after the North's launch on Sunday from a base near Sinpo on its east coast, and the White House has said only that it was a medium-range device.

In early March, the North simultaneously fired four ballistic missiles off its east coast, three of which fell provocatively close to Japan, in what it said was a drill for an attack on USA bases in the country.

The North fears the US and South Korea could use force in an attempt to overthrow the regime of Kim Jong-un.

Trump and Pence, who stopped at the Demilitarized Zone dividing North and South Korea on Monday, have signaled this week a forceful USA stance on North Korea's recent actions.

"It's natural for Air China or other airlines to make such decisions", Lu told a regular press briefing.
