Paris police say officer and attacker shot, killed

Police seal off the Champs Elysees avenue

The shooter, whose identity is still unknown, has reportedly been shot dead.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for a second suspect who had arrived in the country by train from Belgium.

A person who fired on police on the Champs-Elysees shopping boulevard just days ahead of France's presidential election has been killed, the source said.

The Champs-Elysees, a top tourist attraction in Paris, is lined with restaurants, cafes, exclusive designer boutiques and tourist shops.

The Paris prosecutor's office said counterterrorism investigators are involved in the probe into the Thursday attack that left a police officer and the attacker dead.

CNN's Paris bureau is witnessing a large police operation in the area.

"But at this stage I'm advised that the French prosecutor is on the scene and they'll obviously be making further announcements as they investigate the crime", he told the Seven Network on Friday.

A vehicle stopped at 102 Champs-Elysees, in front of a police van, ministry spokesman Pierre Henry Brandet said. "As soon as the policeman opened the door of the van, he fell".

A witness identified only as Ines told French television station BFM that she heard a shooting, saw a man's body on the ground and the area was quickly evacuated by police.

Chaffetz entered office in 2009 and his indefinite departure from politics would leave Utah's 3rd District up for grabs. Chaffetz was re-elected four times in one of the most Republican congressional districts in the country.

BFMTV reported that the killer was known to security administrations and had talked about killing police officers on message boards.

Hollande promised "absolute vigilance" in the next two days ahead of presidential elections on Sunday and paid tribute to a policeman killed in the shooting as well as another two injured officers.

Thursday night's attacker got out of a auto that pulled up next to a police van on the Champs Elysees and opened fired on officers inside and standing by the vehicle, Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet told reporters at a police barrier on the avenue.

Many police vehicles are at the scene and a helicopter hovered overhead.

BFM TV said he was known to police and Agence France-Presse said police were searching a residence in suburban Paris.

US President Donald Trump said the shooting resembled recent terrorist attacks.

Emmanuel Macron, the centrist candidate that polls show has the best chance of being France's next president, said on France2 television that "the first duty of a president is to protect; this imponderable threat will be with us in coming years". Again, it is happening, it seems.

"It looks like another terrorist attack".

He calls the attack a "terrible thing" and says "it never ends". He says people must be strong and vigilant.
