Passenger removal prompts United Airlines China visit

Government watchdogs and consumer groups alike have predicted that the dragging incident could lead to new rules from Congress or the U.S. Department of Transportation strengthening passenger rights.

In response to the public outcry over the incident, United has said that it will require its employees to book seats on hour in advance, to avoid similar incidents of passengers being forced to give up their seats after boarding.

United CEO Oscar Munoz called the debacle "a system failure" during an investor call Tuesday, as reported by the Chicago Tribune, adding that there was "never consideration" of firing any employee.

United Flight 3411 was the subject of intense global scrutiny last week when Dr Dao, a paying customer, was selected to be involuntarily bumped from his seat.

United Airline's Image Takes Online Beating In Memes, Comments: Social media reaction to video footage of a passenger being dragged from a full flight Sunday night has been swift and merciless.

"I want to know why this happened, how it was allowed to occur and what protocols are in place to handle overbooked flights", said Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill.

In a recent interview with industry publication Corporate Counsel, Hawaiian Airlines chief legal officer Aaron Alter said that there are important lessons to be learned from the current crisis of reputation facing United.

The CEO and other United Airlines executives had comments and took questions Tuesday from reporters about the passenger incident on a plane last week.

The parent company of the third-largest commercial airline in the United States reported earnings of 41 cents per share, up from analysts' forecast of 38 cents, and revenues were up 2.7 per cent to $8.4billion.

Mr Munoz declined to address that or other possible changes until the airline finishes a review by April 30.

United President Scott Kirby said that "it's really too early for us to tell anything about bookings", while noting that the company's April-June financial forecast had not changed.

Munoz was then forced to issue a proper apology, saying he "continues to be disturbed" by what happened and that the airline would "fix what's broken so it never happens again".

Call it the new spirit of contrition at United Airlines.
