Stating that Kashmiris were a part of the family, he appealed to everyone to ensure the safety of Kashmiri students living in other parts of the country.

Singh said on Friday that "states have been told to take strong action against people who misbehave with Kashmiris".

"In the coming months, security forces are likely to step up action against people working covertly for separatists", the reports added. "I appeal to everyone to consider the Kashmiri youths as their own brethren and treat them well".

He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh were taking the issue very seriously.
