Russian Federation and Trump's U-turn on Syria

Boris Syria and Russia could face more sanctions

The level of trust between Russian Federation and the United States has not improved since President Trump took office, but has "probably worsened", President Vladimir Putin has said in a new interview.

Most recently, Russian Federation blocked a council resolution in February condemning Syria for chemical attacks using chlorine gas.

"We both believe in a unified and stable Syria and we agree we want to deny a safe haven to terrorists who want to attack both of our countries", Tillerson said.

They plan to press Trump to explain whether he will conduct future attacks against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime as well as push for Congress to reassert its constitutional authority to declare war, congressional aides and lawmakers on the call told CNN.

During the Republican primaries and the general election campaign, Trump referred to Putin in cordial terms, drawing flak from his rivals when he said he would "get along" with the Russian leader. The president's statement reflected that he was drifting away from his campaign promises of establishing better ties with Russian Federation.

Russia's hopes for a thaw in Russia-US ties following Mr Trump's election have been shattered by the congressional investigation into alleged ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia. But any such expectations have crashed into reality amid the nasty back-and-forth over Syria and ongoing US investigations into Russia's alleged interference in America's USA presidential election.

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande said: "Russia bears a heavy responsibility" by systematically opposing multilateral action to protect its Syrian ally Assad.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Friday that "the exchange of information is taking place but we are not officially sating that the validity of this document has been renewed", according to the state news agency Tass.

He credited Vice President Mike Pence with coming up with a "great compromise" that has advanced progress on Republicans' plan. Associated Press writers Julie Bykowicz, Catherine Lucey, Andrew Taylor and Erica Werner contributed to this report.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin hosted US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson at the Kremlin on Wednesday, but the rival powers failed to bridge a deep gap of trust.

Then the U.S. secretary of state announced a sudden shift in the Trump's administration position towards Syria, asserting that there shouldn't be a role for President Bashar Al-Assad in Syria's future. And although the agreement with Russian Federation led in August 2014 to the destruction of more than 600 metric tons of chemical agents, Assad and his allies carried out some 20 chemical attacks on the Aleppo, Idlib, and Rif Damascus governorates between July 2014 and the end of Obama's presidency.

A Syrian official says the government will restore its control over the two towns evacuated of opposition and rebel fighters, as part of a swap deal that also freed residents of two pro-government areas.

"You can't just ask Russian Federation to redefine its interests", he said, adding that "Putin doesn't do favors".

It seems only right given what the US has come to represent over the past decade and a half, that many people across this country refused to call Donald Trump presidential until the moment he bombed Syria. "We're going to see how that works out".

Lavrov, whose government surprised the West last week when Putin's spokesman said support for the Assad regime was "not unconditional", said Moscow was not placing its hopes on any individual in Syria, including Assad. "I think he had a very successful meeting in Russia", Trump said. "The world's two foremost nuclear powers can not have this kind of relationship", Tillerson said at a news conference.

Trump's relations with Russian Federation are also a domestic issue, as US intelligence agencies have accused Moscow of using computer hacking to intervene in the USA presidential election to help Trump win. I have absolutely no doubt we did the right thing.
