Seagulls soar to top-flight promotion

Brighton players celebrate after securing promotion to the Premier League

Brighton will return to the top flight next season for the first time in 34 years after securing promotion from the Sky Bet Championship.

Brighton's promotion, clinched on Monday in front of nearly 30,000 ecstatic supporters, marks the first time in 34 years that the south-coast club have risen to the top of the English football pyramid.

The 58-year-old boss can take as much credit as anyone for the Seagulls' promotion to the top flight.

Moreover, to see the Seagulls come up to Selhurst and leave wondering why they can't topple the Eagles is something I very much look forward to.

Nick Powell pulled a late goal back for the Latics at the Amex Stadium, but there was to be no equaliser on what was a tough afternoon for the visitors - in front of a largely jubilant crowd of almost 30,000. Less than twenty years after the Seagulls were withering in England fourth division, they've made the long and hard climb back up the pyramid.

Brighton need only to better Newcastle United's result this weekend to secure the title, while Tottenham closed the gap on Chelsea to four points over Easter.

Bloom has spent around £250m during his eight years with the club, building the Amex Stadium and Brighton's sparkling training facility at Lancing, but has had to be patient before seeing his side reach the elite. It's certainly a wonderful feeling, for myself, but more so for a group of supporters and a club when you have a local investor that in this day and age is prepared to put his money into a club.

Huddersfield had gone ahead early, thanks to Collin Quaner's second goal in as many games, but were brought back to earth in the 88th minute, when Jacob Butterfield slotted a goal from outside the area.

But instead of a sustained Newcastle fightback, the match witnessed two more Ipswich goals instead, with David McGoldrick and Emyr Huws getting on the scoresheet.

In a match with relatively little at stake, 14th-placed Barnsley were held at Oakwell for the fifth game in a row, with 11th-placed Brentford claiming a 1-1 draw. The first stage was to get us to stay up.

In the play-off picture wins for Reading, Sheffield Wednesday and Fulham saw Leeds edged out of the top six.
