Sensex ends 57 points lower; Nifty settles at 9119-mark

Bulked up by foreign inflows rupee hits 20-month high exporters wary

Mumbai: Benchmark Sensex fell over 57 points to end at 29,365.30 today after investors moved in to book profits amid sustained foreign fund outflows.

The Sensex touched a high of 29,584.34 points and a low of 29,259.42 points during the intra-day trade.

On Thursday, the BSE Sensex closed 86 points or 0.29 per cent up at 29,422 while the NSE Nifty ended 33 points or 0.36 per cent higher at 9,136.

The Sensex and Nifty ended lower in a volatile trading session on Friday, ahead of the expiry of futures and options contracts next week, with indexes posting their second straight weekly loss.

However, caution prevailed over the ongoing fourth quarter results season, coupled with mixed global cues and a marginally weak rupee. "A hawkish tone of RBI in its latest minutes has also added pressure on the downside", said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

In terms of the broader markets, the S&P BSE mid-cap index was up by 0.02 per cent, while the small-cap index closed higher by 0.25 per cent.

Globally, other Asian markets rose broadly after the Nasdaq Composite hit record high overnight, buoyed by solid earnings led by American Express and on optimism for a USA tax overhaul.

Asian markets were mostly mixed with Hong Kong's Hang Seng falling 0.06 percent, while Japan's Nikkei rose 1.03 percent. China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.03 per cent.

London's FTSE shed 0.17 per cent.
