South Africa picks Maharaj, Morkel for Champions Trophy

Champions Trophy 2017

However, Steyn will continue his recovery from shoulder surgery with South Africa A, while another experienced seamer, Vernon Philander, remains absent from the limited-overs set-up.

South Africa on Wednesday selected uncapped spinner Keshav Maharaj and recalled quick bowler Morne Morkel for the Champions Trophy, while Dale Steyn will make his comeback from injury with the Proteas' second-string team.

AB De Villiers will captain the South African side at the Champion Trophy.

The same squad will represent South Africa in three one-day internationals against England, starting in Leeds on May 24, ahead of the Champions Trophy.

Maharaj, who made a successful debut for South Africa during the recent Test season, is the only player in the 15-man squad who has not played in a one-day worldwide.

Younis Khan eyes Test milestone
Younis Khan is just 23 runs away from becoming the first Pakistan player to score 10,000 Test runs. Pakistan topped the Test rankings last September following their drawn series in England.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) convener of selectors, Linda Zondi, said: "We have been working with this group of players for the last two seasons where our key emphasis has been consistency in selection". Their first group match of the Champions Trophy will come on June 3 against Sri Lanka at the Oval.

Zondi's panel picked four seam-bowling all-rounders - Chris Morris, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius - while Morné Morkel will provide an extra fast-bowling option.

Morne Morkel makes a return to the limited-overs format after almost 10 months, adding experience to the pace bowling group featuring Kagiso Rabada, Wayne Parnell, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius and Andile Phehlukwayo.

Also left-arm-spinner Keshav Maharaj has been called-up following his successful performances in New Zealand taking the place of wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi. "Should he play‚ it allows us the option of breathing easier than the option of two outright spinners who can't bat".

"We feel we have a squad that covers every scenario that we could possibly be faced with on the tour". The squad will depart for England on May 16 and will play in practice matches against Sussex and Northants. They are now the No. 1-ranked one-day side, having won 3-2 in New Zealand, and have the top-ranked batsman and bowler in de Villiers and Tahir.
