South Korea on heightened alert

Mines in DMZ

Hwang Kyoahn, South Korea's acting president, called for military and security ministries to remain vigilant in a meeting Thursday with top officials.

For the past quarter century, the United States and South Korea have tried to convince North Korea to abandon its nuclear aspirations.

The United States, its allies and China are working on a range of responses to North Korea's missile test, US officials have said. Instead, it should crack down on the foreign financial dealings of North Korean officials and companies and the foreign states that help them.

A soldier salutes from atop an armoured vehicle as it drives past the stand with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during a military parade marking the 105th birth anniversary of country's founding father Kim Il Sung, in Pyongyang April 15, 2017.

He warned the North, which has conducted missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions, that the "era of strategic patience" was over.

Diplomats said the US -drafted statement would strongly condemn the launch and express the council's "utmost concern" at North Korea's "highly destabilizing behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance" of council resolutions.

Mr Bennett said the North Koreans have a sense that they and the USA "are not really playing chess" because Mr Trump appears to only be thinking about the next move by considering a surgical strike as a real option.

United States not focused on removing Syria's Assad
Haley said "getting Assad out is not the only priority" and that countering Iran's influence in Syria was another. But there have been repeated allegations of chemical weapons use by the government since then.

"The alliance between the United States and Japan is the cornerstone of peace and security in Northeast Asia", he told Abe.

He has sent a navy strike group towards the Korean Peninsula, and the US and South Korea are moving ahead with the early deployment of a controversial missile defence system.

The spectacle was followed by a test of their so-called intercontinental missile, which failed just five seconds after launch, observers in the US and South Korea said.

During the interview - which aired the morning after Trump live-tweeted the show - host Ainsley Earhardt raised the topic of North Korea.

Han told the BBC that North Korea believed its nuclear weapons "protect" it from the threat of U.S. military action. "We are with you 100 percent".

Meanwhile, US vice president Mike Pence warned North Korea not to test the resolve of America's military, promising it would make an "overwhelming and effective" response to any use of conventional or nuclear weapons.

North Korea's missile tests certainly appear to have upset China, which voiced rare concerns about North Korea's nuclear and missile development.
