Syria War: Huge Bomb Kills Dozens Of Evacuees

The bloody mayhem that followed the Saturday attack only deepened the resentment of the transfer, criticised as population engineering.

Photos from the scene showed dozens of people in body bags lying in the street.

A deadly explosion has killed more than 112 people, including children, government supporters and opposition fighters, at an evacuation point outside Aleppo city.

The undamaged buses from the convoy continued Saturday and arrived in the evening at a temporary housing center in the Jebrin area of Aleppo.

The evacuees were being transported to Aleppo from villages along the front lines of fighting between government forces and rebel groups. The buses headed to the Jebrin area for a temporary housing center equipped with food and medical supplies, SANA said. Local medical facilities were stretched to the limit treating victims of the attack, while rights groups condemned the killing.

A military media unit run by Damascus ally Hezbollah said a suicide attacker had detonated a vehicle bomb near the convoy. "We're sad and angry about what has happened". He said the regime kills scores of people daily using all types of weaponry and doesn't need to kill its own sympathizers.

Anthony Lake, UNICEF's executive director, said in a statement Sunday that after six years of war and carnage in Syria "there comes a new horror that must break the heart of anyone who has one".

Under the evacuation deal, more than 2000 people, including rebel fighters, were granted safe passage out of Madaya, a town near Damascus besieged by government forces and their allies.

Madaya and Zabadani, once summer resorts to Damascus, have been shattered under the cruelty of a government siege.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the bombing, though the key Ahrar al-Sham rebel group denied any involvement.

"In the complex and often dramatic situations of today's world, may the Risen Lord guide the steps of all those who work for justice and peace", he said. The group said the attack only serves to deflect the attention from government "crimes" and said it was ready to cooperate with an global probe to determine who did it.

The explosion reportedly occurred toward the front of the 70-bus convoy. The evacuation of more than 3,000 Syrians was instantly halted.

The deal was brokered by Iran and Qatar, Agence France-Presse reported.

More than 5,000 people left Foua and Kafraya and about 2,200 left Madaya and Zabadani on Friday, the latest in a series of evacuations from the four towns under the agreement.
