Teacher faces federal charge in student case

During the almost six weeks that Tad Cummins and 15-year-old Elizabeth Thomas were missing, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation received more than 1,500 tips.

Deputies ultimately located Cummins' Nissan Rogue, which had the license plate removed but was verified through its VIN number, and kept the SUV under surveillance for hours. We are extremely thankful the hard work of all partners in this search has paid off.

"We couldn't be happier to tell you she will soon be on her way back home to Tennessee", Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn said. Police say the gunman walked up to the two male workers for Laclede Gas and began shooting, then turned the gun on himself.

The federal charges are in addition to other charges being filed against Cummins by the states of Tennessee and California.

"I'm glad this is over", 50-year-old Tad Cummins said after his arrest, according to Siskiyou County sheriff's Sgt. Mike Gilley. Despite his betrayal, Jill recently said that she "still loves him".

But state law allows children older than 12 to decide whether to leave their families, unless their removal or confinement "is accomplished by force, threat or fraud". Thomas was subsequently recovered by officers, and efforts to reunite her with her family are ongoing.

Elizabeth has been missing since Cummins allegedly kidnapped her on March 13.

Cummins and Thomas were spotted on store surveillance video in the only sighting of the two during their almost six-week disappearance.

Tad Cummins was arrested after an unidentified person called a tip line.

A representative from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Cummins would face federal charges in addition to the state charges TBI already filed against him. They were last spotted by a Walmart surveillance camera in Oklahoma City on March 15, two days after they disappeared from Columbia, Tenn., almost 700 miles away.

The student, Elizabeth Thomas, was found safe in a commune in Cecilville, near the OR border, her sister Kat Thomas said.

"Subsequent investigation revealed that Cummins had no scheduled interview", the complaint says. When the caretaker and neighbor realized who they were, they hatched a plan to get Cummins to stay in the cabin for one more night. He didn't buy "anything else of significance", the TBI said.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities say a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who disappeared with her teacher last month has been found safe in California and the teacher has been arrested.

Rep. Sheila Butt of Columbia, Tennessee told the outlet that the abduction has brought the community together and that the news of Elizabeth Thomas' rescue has been an answered prayer.

"Jill will attempt to move forward with her life", attorney Michael Cox said in a statement provided to ABC News on March 31. "She has not spoken to Tad".

Berry describes Cummins' behavior as controlling and suspicious, saying, "He talked for her a lot".
