The origins of 4/20, marijuana's high holiday

4/20 Day sponsor Alex Aquino addressed media after the press conference

Seriously, since 4/20 has always been the day marijuana aficionados officially celebrate their beloved cannabis, today is packed fat as a fatty with events large and small to pay homage to blunts, buds and bogarting.

The story told on countless couches around the country is that "420" is police code for a marijuana arrest. But take a clear-eyed look at that explanation, and it goes up in smoke. That's where the Grateful Dead came in.

Another is that 420 is the number of chemical compounds in marijuana. And, there's no limit to the number of "420" branded bongs, lighters, stickers, any and all pieces of clothing, bed sheets, oven mitts, nail decals, jewelry and, honestly, anything else you can think of. High Times published it. First, let's get the myths and rumors out of the way: The legend of the California penal codeSome claim the number is drawn from the California criminal codes used to punish the use or distribution of marijuana.

"Whether you prefer to call it puffing the magic dragon, blowing a stick, or giggling weed, there's no better place to 420 this April than London".

A group of friends at San Rafael High School in Marin County who called themselves "the Waldos" would often meet at 4:20 p.m.to get high. A treasure map in hand, the Waldos made a decision to pluck some of the free bud. The students would meet at 4:20 p.m. near a statue of Louis Pasteur on the grounds of San Rafael High School to go to search for the crop.

Today, April 20 is celebrated by pot lovers as a festival day. Though it wound up being a wild goose chase, it eventually gave rise to the shortened term "420" to denote smoking marijuana.

Chipmaker Qualcomm's revenue falls 9.6 pct
Revenues fell 10 percent year-on-year to United States dollars 5.0 billion, and net profit was down 36 percent to USD 0.7 billion. Looking ahead, QCOM forecast Q3 EPS of $0.90 to $1.15, roughly in-line with the $1.10 per share that analysts are looking for.

While they never found the secret stash, the popularity of 420 began to spread, as their classmates picked up on the term.

"Until then, it was relatively confined to the Grateful Dead subculture", Hager told the Huffington Post.

The Waldos not only spoke with an editor at High Times (not Bloom) and signed statements attesting the truth of their story, but they also provided documents, such as old letters referring to marijuana by its numerical nickname, old high-school newspapers using the term, and even a "420", batik-dyed marijuana flag, according to 420Waldos.com.

"It's a phenomenon", said one of the Waldos, Steve Capper, now 62 and a chief executive at a payroll financing company in San Francisco. The flier that Bloom and others received at the Oakland Grateful Dead concert may have been the catalyst that launched "420" from local Northern California underground slang to the central day for major marijuana celebrations and protests throughout the world.

In downtown Oakland's Marriott City Center, you'll find Psychedelic Science 2017, the global scientific community confab to explore new research into the benefits and risks of not just pot but of LSD, psilocybin and more.

After a few of these meetings, "420" became shorthand for anything related to weed among the Waldos gang. "It's become the stoner high holiday, and these guys are the people who created it".
