Theresa May's Snap Election Isn't All About Brexit

After the votes had been tallied, the motion for a 2017 United Kingdom general election was approved by an overwhelming margin of 522 for and 13 against.

"The government needs a mandate to govern and if it lacks the legitimacy even to deliver on its centre-piece announcement of a rise in national insurance rates for the self-employed, then an election in pursuit of a strengthened majority was the logical solution", he said.

Britain's next election had been scheduled for May 2020, but a two-thirds majority in parliament could overrule that in Wednesday's vote, which British media reported could come at around 1300 GMT after an hour and a half of debate.

"A general election will provide the country with five years of strong and stable leadership to see us through the negotiations and ensure we are able to go on to make a success as a result, and that is crucial".

For starters, she is reversing a position she has maintained since announcing her candidacy to succeed Cameron as Tory leader (and thus as prime minister).

"How can any voter trust what the prime minister says?" asked Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the Labour Party.

Philip Dunne, Owen Paterson, Daniel Kawczynski, Lucy Allan, Mark Pritchard, and Glyn Davies, all voted with the government to abandon the fixed-term parliament for 2015-20, and instead hold a general election on June 8.

Scotland voted overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union and Sturgeon argues it should now be allowed to break off from Britain to hold on to close ties with the bloc. What this victory will give May (as well as the chance to crush Labour before it comes to its senses and gets itself a new leader) is a whole bunch of new Tory backbenchers who, whatever their views on Europe and other issues, will know full well that they owe their place on the green benches mainly to her.

Next step for Predators: Getting beyond second round
Bryan Rust scored twice for Pittsburgh, Phil Kessel added his second of the playoffs and Marc-Andre Fleury finished with 49 saves. Rinne has reason to feel confident after allowing just one even-strength goal during the entire series with Chicago.

Theresa May clashed with MPs during a debate in parliament ahead of the vote in favour of an early election. May called for the election on Tuesday, sending the pound over 2% higher on the day.

"That is being impeded by the Labour Party and we need to support the Prime Minister in getting a mandate to get the best possible deal for our country".

Both Labour and Liberal Democrats have officially welcomed the early poll and are expected to back it in Wednesday afternoon's vote.

"Labour is the party that will put the interests of the majority first". Those of us who believe society and the economy thrive with less intervention must hope the Prime Minister heeds the warnings of her Cabinet colleagues.

"It's the right decision, it's in the national interest, and that's what this election is about".

A man passing by commented: "I hope you become Prime Minister" - prompting a smile and thanks from Mr Corbyn.

All sides are now gearing up for the fourth major election in four years, after last June's shock referendum vote for Brexit, the 2015 general election, and the 2014 Scottish independence vote. And a Labour government elected on 8 June won't play by their rules. However, Mrs. May defended her motivation as stemming from a legitimate desire to prevent Britain from being at a disadvantage while negotiating Brexit. Under Britain's first-past-the-post electoral system, the Conservatives would likely have a hefty majority of more than 100 seats in the House of Commons - up from 14 now.

Last year's vote to leave the European Union split Labour's traditional supporter base, which is divided between typically pro-EU inner city voters, and working-class voters in less affluent areas who voted in favor of Brexit.
