Trump addresses Paris incident: Looks like a terrorist attack

A known extremist opened fire on police officers late Thursday on the Champs-Élysées boulevard in Paris, officials said.

The Thursday evening attack took place in the city's Champs-Elysees district, which is hugely popular with tourists and shoppers. Delivery trucks were making their rounds.

Security forces are believed to have moved to searching the home of the dead gunman in the east of Paris. During the ensuing gun battle - witnesses spoke of a short but intense exchange of fire - the suspected attacker was killed and two other officers wounded.

Police tape surrounded the quiet, middle-class neighbourhood in Chelles early Friday, and anxious neighbours expressed surprise at the searches.

Earlier this week, in a separate incident, French authorities arrested two men in Marseille, saying they were suspected of planning an "imminent" attack ahead of the election and were found in possession of an arsenal of weapons.

The Islamic State reported through its Amaq news agency that the attacker was Abu Yusuf al-Beljiki, which was confirmed by the U.S. organization that monitors terrorists' activity online, SITE Intel Group.

They [the police] were deliberately targeted.

President Francois Hollande has said it is a terrorist attack and will hold a security meeting on Friday morning.

Anti-terror prosecutors immediately took up the investigation and President Francois Hollande said it was "of a terrorist nature".

Two police sources said the gunman had been flagged as an extremist.

It was unclear how Trump concluded that terrorism was a factor, as Paris police had yet to announce a motive when Trump commented from the White House during his joint press conference with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Although the police have also confirmed the identity of the gunman, they are withholding his name to allow time to determine whether he had any accomplices, Paris Chief Prosecutor François Molins said at the crime scene.

As police blocked off key roadways in the heart of the French capital and told people to avoid the area, the broad avenues leading to the Arc de Triomphe were awash in police vehicles decked with whirling blue lights.
