Turkey's Erdogan Says He's Set to Meet Trump in Washington

In this Monday, April 3, 2017 photo, banners showing modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, left, and Turkey's current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, right, decorate a building as people watch Erdogan's speech, during a rally for the upcoming referendum, in his hometown city of Rize, in the Black Sea region, Turkey.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Wednesday the two leaders would meet before a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels next month and were trying to finalize a date.

Preliminary referendum results gave a narrow 51.4 percent approval for the biggest overhaul of Turkey's political system since the modern state was established almost a century ago, but opposition parties said the poll was deeply flawed.

President Trump called Mr Erdogan on Monday to congratulate him on his victory in a contested referendum to expand the powers of Turkey's presidency, although Turkish opposition parties and worldwide monitoring groups have raised concerns about the vote.

The meeting will be the first between the two leaders since Trump took office in January.

"The Constitutional Court has no right and authority to review the referendum according to the Constitution and the conventions that Turkey is party to", Bozdag told A Haber, adding that the Turkish constitution "explicitly rules that the decisions of the Supreme Election Board (YSK) are final and no authority can be resorted to against these decisions".

Erdogan's controversial victory essentially reaffirms his authoritarian rule.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cazvusoglu told reporters in Ankara on Wednesday that the USA and Turkish leaders expressed a common desire to meet in Washington "to improve bilateral relations".

Ankara is also pressing for the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric living in the United States who is accused by Erdogan of engineering the failed coup.

Last month, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson became the most senior American official to visit Turkey.

The YPG is the dominant group within the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Syria.

The CHP and the pro-Kurdish HDP party, which says millions of unstamped ballots were accepted, have said they could also appeal the referendum result at the European Court of Human Rights if their legal challenges fail in Turkish courts.
