U.S. to look at 'all of the threats posed by Iran'

Tillerson told reporters the review, which he announced on Tuesday (18 April), would not only look at Tehran's compliance with a 2015 nuclear deal but also its behaviour in the region which he said undermined United States interests in Syria, Iraq, Yemen and Lebanon.

Mr Tillerson acknowledged the Iranians had met the terms of the 2015 deal, but raised concerns about the country as a "state sponsor of terrorism".

Mr Trump has described the landmark agreement as the "worst deal ever".

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, pictured in Moscow last week, says Iran has been abiding by a 2015 nuclear agreement.

"The evidence is clear: Iran's provocative actions threaten the United States, the region and the world", Tillerson said.

President Trump is warning Americans to be "concerned" about the prospect of a nuclear war, and Vice President Mike Pence said in a trip to the A... That includes Iran's support for Houthi rebels in Yemen, its backing for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and for Islamic militant groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He says that will be determined by an ongoing review.

Tillerson also appeared to sketch out the terms of such diplomatic engagement, suggesting that the USA would not offer aid for concessions from North Korea as has been done in the past.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told Congress in a letter sent Tuesday that Iran is complying with requirements for its nuclear program imposed under the nuclear accord.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry (L), U.S. Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz (2nd L), Head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Organisation Ali Akbar Salehi (2nd R) and Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif (R) wait with others ahead of a meeting at the Beau Rivage Palace Hotel in Lausanne on March 26, 2015. He characterized the Obama-era nuclear deal as simply delaying but not destroying Iran's ability to eventually produce a nuclear weapon.

Former President Barack Obama would have agreed with all the charges: that Iran is a state sponsor of terrorism, that it supports proxies which undermine U.S. interests in the region, that it's hostile to Israel and that its ballistic missile tests challenge UN Security Council prohibitions.

Tillerson said one of the mistakes in the way the agreement was put together was that it ignored all the other serious threats Iran posed outside of its nuclear program.

Trump administration officials unleashed a new attack against the deal, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), by repeating baseless allegations against Tehran on Wednesday. "The two leaders spoke at length about the dangers posed by the nuclear deal with Iran and by Iran's malevolent behavior in the region and about the need to work together to counter those dangers", read a statement about the call from Netanyahu's office.

And, with a funding deadline looming to keep the government running, Trump said it was possible Congress would manage to accomplish it all next week or "shortly thereafter".

"I'm glad this deal has held up to this point, and I hope it continues to hold up", said Wendy Sherman, a former undersecretary of state who was deeply involved in negotiating terms of the deal during the Obama administration.

He said of Iran, "I think they are doing a tremendous disservice to an agreement that was signed".
